MAIN JOB PURPOSE:

Unilever Beauty & Personal Care (BPC) Division, Science & Technology (S&T) is the channel for new science and emerging technology supporting Unilever's long-term innovation ambitions. BPC S&T scientists work towards discovering the science to optimise the biology of our consumers and creating winning products and sensory experiences for real life.

We are recruiting a trainee Bioinformatician to work with expert informaticians and biologists in the application of bioinformatics and systems biology analysis tools to obtain meaningful interpretation and results from NGS and other ‘Omics data. Candidates who have bioinformatics or omics data analysis experience, and who are keen to develop further bioinformatics skills, are encouraged to apply.

As part of a 30 months Level 7 Bioinformatics Scientist Apprenticeship, the successful candidate will develop a strong understanding for the application of bioinformatics in industrial R&D, while studying for an MRes and working alongside biology teams at the biology/modelling interface, helping to design omics experiments and developing capabilities for them to perform their own expert analyses.

JOB SUMMARY

· Work with biology teams to analyse and implement systems biology analysis methods across a range of data types to create biological in-silico networks for biological insights
· Work with team members to develop novel strategies to integrate and analyse multi-omics and other types of data for discovery of new biomarkers, targets and leads.
· Work with others in the team to implement data analysis pipelines with user-friendly interfaces suitable for biologists to process, analyse, and interpret data.
· Manage, process, and interpret large heterologous data sets for understanding by disparate stakeholders.
· Become proficient in big data visualisation and appropriate communication to disparate stakeholders.
· Develop bioinformatics skills for application in analysis of -omics and other large, complex, multi-dimensional datasets using commercial and/or open source tools
· Successful completion of the Bioinformatics Scientist Apprenticeship.

KEY REQUIREMENTS:

· Degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Systems Biology, Computer Science, Life Science, Molecular Biology or related field.
· An understanding of biological techniques and ‘omics technology.
· Basic skills in programming/scripting or systems biology modelling, or demonstrable aptitude in developing these skills, would be an advantage.
· Hard working, adaptable, organised, able to work in a collaborative way
· Ability and desire to learn new skills, and how to be innovative with emerging omics data in order to support biologists in a rapidly evolving science area.
· Ability to translate complex results into clear insights for communication to stakeholders.
