Job description

Business Context and Main Purpose of the Job

The Analytical Lab in Unilever R&D Shanghai is crucial in all phases of product development and production, supporting across categories and business groups/unites. Without high quality analytical support, it is nearly impossible to perform the required detailed characterization of raw materials, to establish insights into the mode of action (MOA) of key actives in products, to perform evaluation of prototypes, control the quality of products, build evidence for claim substantiation, support patents and detect patent infringement, and eventually develop new and improved products.

The role requires excellent knowledge of wide analytical core capabilities including sampling, sample treatment, instrumental analysis, data processing and interpretation. Next to this, he or she will require basic category knowledge in Home Care/Personal Care and application understanding to be able to generate correct data and interpret these in a way they help in building insights and capabilities. The candidate needs to work with multiple interfaces. Hence, it is ideally suited to an energetic, self-motivated person with good communication skills.

Main Accountabilities

Work in R&D function for the product development in areas of Analytical Chemistry, performing as an active analytical coordinator and expert with following responsibilities:

·  Act as analytical coordinator for Home Care/Personal Care NA R&D, delivering analytical insights and solutions.
·  Develop purpose-fit analytical capabilities to meet the business needs.
·  Source, qualify, and manage the use of external analytical labs for routine service and unique capability building.
·  Take responsibility for the management of in-house instruments like GCMS, LCMS and offering operation trainings.
·  Keep up to date with knowledge in analytical science and bring new methodologies as relevant.
·  Ensure delivery of work of high quality and accuracy.
·  Deliver effective reporting and interpretation of analytical data.
·  Follow good laboratory practices and SHE requirements.

Critical success Factors for the Job

·  Strong hand-on experience in analytical skills, like chromatography, mass spectroscopy, IR, Raman, NMR, SEM, etc with proven record like journal publications. Experienced in multiple analytical skills will be a plus.
·  Awareness of business innovations – be able to land analytical capabilities/insights into new product development.
·  Be pro-active and self-motivated to engage with project leaders and team members.
·  Have team spirit, strong responsibility & accountability, and clear logistic thinking.
·  Proficient in both written and spoken English.
·  Work on their own initiative and a desire to continually develop their scientific skills.
·  PhD or Master in Analytical Chemistry or related areas.
·  >=2 year working experience in home and personal care industry is a plus.
