ABOUT THE ROLE
We are currently recruiting for a Packaging Engineer who will work closely with internal Unilever functions (R&D, Supply Management, Supply Chain) and external suppliers to cover all aspects relating to the use of the AMC (Advanced Manufacturing Centre), the PTA (Packaging Technology Area) and to support packaging development (Invention, Innovation, Scale-up and Roll-out.)
Main Purpose of the job
• Responsible for the set-up and maintenance of the equipment forming the AMC PTA pilot plant
• Support design and/or leadership of packaging trials in the AMC PTA pilot plant
• Lead organisation and maintenance of standards within the PTA
• Work as part of the project team to Coordinate and manage the delivery of the testing programmes on global projects.
• Lead, deliver and contribute to parts of the Hair Packaging Strategy.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The role holder will have a deep understanding of HPC (Home and Personal Care) Packaging equipment and the aptitude to develop an insightful knowledge of current and next generation packaging materials.
• Lead the packaging development activities with respect to testing in the AMC PTA. Provide technical guidance to packaging team and support use of PTA
• Provide necessary support and training to various groups; including general AMC users, personnel attending dedicated packaging training courses and SU operators and engineers when new kit is available in the AMC but not yet widely deployed.
• Attend and contribute to technical team meetings. Communicate with regional packaging colleagues to receive inputs, provide project updates and share information.
• Effectively communicate with multiple functions and external parties to ensure relevant packaging activities adhere to network timings. Ensure all packaging deliverables are accounted for in decision gate documents and that all risks are identified and managed.
• Ensure key project deliverables are met by managing key stakeholders requirements (e.g. Technical Project Leader, Marketing Project Leader) and deputise for the Packaging Leader as required.
• Manage and lead technical relationships with suppliers to deliver new hardware designs, component qualifications, evaluation and testing. Be aware of protecting intellectual property and set up confidentiality agreements where required.
• Define material specifications for new variants and assist with the development of functional specifications for key global projects.
• Play an active role in leading and contributing to the Unilever Packaging Strategy and other departmental activities.
• Design and develop new test methods and/or use existing global test methods to evaluate new or existing packaging. Ensuring the packaging is compatible with supply chain, formulation, Unilever policy, Consumer and Brand needs and regional legislation.
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
• A time served Mechanical or Multi-Skilled Apprenticeship
• A multi-skilled engineering background (e.g. electrical, mechanical, software)
• City in guilds, HNC, ONC in a relevant engineering background Desired
Relevant experience:
• Experience working with HPC liquids machinery (additional powders and capsules experience desirable but not necessary)
• Processes where Continuous Improvement has been used
• Experience in finding the root cause of a problem and fixing it required
• Outline knowledge of liquids packaging materials
• Fluent PC skills including Excel, PowerPoint & word
• Ability to read technical drawings and understand tolerances preferable
