Salary: £22,913 - £31,347

Background:
The Global Fragrance Centre (GFC) is Unilever's global cross-Category centre of expertise on the technical aspects of fragrance in Home and Personal Care products. It is a team of 8 people based at Port Sunlight with specialist knowledge and skills in fragrance technology, detailed fragrance analysis in products, substrates and packs, and regulatory/issues/patents relating to fragrance. This expertise is applied to support brand strategies across R&D, specifically providing technical support to innovation projects, insight into competitor fragrance strategies, costing, cross-Category coordination of responses to regulatory/issues/patents and cross-Category transfer of learning and opportunities.
The GFC has a vacancy for a Fragrance Analyst. The ideal candidate will have a passion for the role of fragrance as a critical sensory component of our brand mixes, and the importance of technical and competitor understanding to harness its benefits. They will have experience with GCMS approaches with sufficient knowledge to troubleshoot equipment and maintain operation within defined parameters.
Main Job Purpose:
To use and develop analytical methods to investigate and understand the behaviour of fragrance in HPC products.
To support Unilever's HPC business with the analysis of fragrance compositions.
Key Accountabilities:
- Maintenance of analytical equipment
- Develop, modify and utilise methodology/equipment to carry out analysis of fragrance components in Home and Personal Care applications
- Organisation and interpretation of analytical data to draw conclusions regarding fragrance composition/behaviour
- Management of GFC projects: interacting with Category customers, sample handling, planning experiments, data interpretation and compiling results / case reports for customers
Skills/ Experience/ Qualifications:
- A science-based education in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or similar, preferably to degree level
- Interest in the world of fragrances and its underlying chemistry
- Enthusiasm and commitment to delivering results to customers on agreed timescales
- Evidence of good team-working skills and proven delivery in such an environment
Key Skills
- Technical expertise on GC and GCMS equipment, maintenance and applications
- Experience in data management, analysis and interpretation
Desirable Experience
- Experience of Home and Personal Care products and their fragrances
- Experience of fragrance and/or flavour analysis; identification and quantification of ingredients in HPC products, generating key insights on how specific materials are used (e.g. fragrance architecture, natural oils, etc)
- Experience of carrying out fragrance raw material value/cost estimates and understanding the limitations of such calculations
- Formal Olfactive training
- Experience of fragrance technologies and analysis
- A proven track record of method development for the extraction and analysis of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds
