Job Title: Environment Risk Assessor
Salary: Competitive with bonus, Healthcare and Pension
Location: COLWORTH, Bedford UK
Travel: up to 5%
Business Context and Main Purpose of the Job
SEAC is a Unilever Capability housed in R&D. SEAC scientists provide authoritative leadership in safety (Consumer, Occupational & Environmental) and environmental sustainability (COES) for risk/impact-based decision making to help drive Unilever's sustainable growth ambitions.
You will be responsible for the development and application of environmental risk assessment models used to understand potential environmental safety risks associated with ingredients across Unilever's product portfolio. With experience in higher tier approaches to chemical risk assessment, you will work with others across SEAC to develop, use and link mechanistic effects models (e.g. individual, population, ecosystem) with temporally and spatially explicit fate and exposure models. You will provide leadership to the development of novel approaches to risk assessment, management and communication that provides new mechanistic insights to ingredient safety where traditional approaches are inadequate.
Main Accountabilities
· Carry out risk assessments related to the use of Unilever ingredients with a focus on the development and use of new approaches to improve our mechanistic understanding of ingredient fate and effects.
· Work with others in SEAC (e.g. environmental modellers, risk assessors and experimental scientists) to design and lead the development of novel approaches to refine environmental risk assessment and the external acceptance of these approaches.
· Identify capability requirements to ensure the delivery of the current & future SEAC work programme and contribute to the strategic direction of the discipline
· Actively participate in external activities to influence scientific developments in risk assessment within industry task forces and workshops, scientific conferences and with regulators.
· Engage external networks and build strong collaborative relationships to develop environmental risk assessment models, including leading external research programmes.
· Advise SEAC and Unilever of emerging issues in the area of environmental safety
· Involvement in the design, placement and monitoring of experimental studies conducted internally and externally
· Act as a Project Leader within SEAC to support the Unilever business and build future capability.
Critical Success factors for the Job
Key Skills and Experience
· A first degree in a biological, chemical or environmental science
· A postgraduate professional qualification and/or PhD
· Proven experience in chemical risk assessment in an industrial or regulatory context, including understanding testing requirements, experimental design and interpretation of results
· Experience of leading projects and working in multidisciplinary teams
