Master thesis - Modelling of tire wear in heavy vehicles

  • Göteborg, SWEDEN
  • Design / Civil engineering / Industrial engineering

Job description

Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future? If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

Location: Göteborg, Sweden
Time Schedule: Jan 2025- Jun 2025

At Volvo Group Trucks Technology (GTT) - Vehicle Engineering - Common Architecture and Shared Technologies (CAST) - Platform Energy, you will contribute to the transformation of our company, the transport industry and society at large. Understanding the tire wear mechanism can help reducing tire wear in heavy vehicles which is crucial for several reasons including safety, maintains traction, cost-effectiveness, e.g., lowers replacement costs and improved fuel efficiency, environmental impact, regulatory compliance and meeting legal requirements for tread depth and tire condition. A considerable amount of microplastics entering the ocean come from the rubber in tires which is harmful for fish life and can cause cancer in humans.

Tire wear is affected by vehicle type and dimensions, transport mission and routes, tire material and design, driving behaviour, axle loads, pressure, temperature, speed, etc. Capturing all these effects can be a difficult task.

Project Objective: To model and understand how different tires wear in a given vehicle and transport mission.

Method: Designing a tire wear model which, for example, relates to CDTire model and its parameters developed by Fraunhofer. The method includes to use or to design a finite element-like model of the tire deformation and pressure distribution. That model then can be used to relate tire friction and slip on roads to tire wear.

Available resources:  Models of vehicles, mission and routes in Matlab. Data on wear measurement and experimental tire pressure distribution can potentially be available as well.

The thesis is recommended for one or two students with a strong background in mechanics and mathematical modelling with good programming skills. Prior experience with programming in Python, vehicle dynamics, finite element method, and simulation is meritorious.
