Master thesis - Fine tuning an LLM for tactical decision making in L3 autonomous trucks

  • Göteborg, SWEDEN

Job description

Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport solutions for the future? If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

Description

The development of autonomous driving systems is at the forefront of improving safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness in transportation. With the advancement of large language models (LLMs), their ability to process and understand complex instructions has opened new possibilities for their application in the domain of autonomous vehicle control. The main goal of the thesis is to fine-tune an LLM such as Llama 3.1 for high-level tactical decision making in L3 autonomous trucks. The project will use supervised fine-tuning methods by generating instruction datasets that focus on basic truck driving instructions and optionally extend it to advanced driving behaviors that emphasize best practices on road and minimizing the total cost of operation.

The main objectives of this thesis are:

·
Instruction Dataset Generation: Generate datasets of driving instructions for autonomous truck driving, ranging from basic operational tasks to best practices and efficiency-focused behaviors.

·
Fine-Tuning an LLM: Use the generated datasets to fine-tune an LLM enhancing its ability to make informed decisions in traffic scenarios. After training with each dataset, evaluate whether the model pass/fail remembering the objectives from the previous one.

·
Evaluation and Testing: Evaluate the fine-tuned LLM's performance in simulation environments, measuring safety, driving efficiency, and responsiveness to changing traffic conditions.

Who are you

The project will use advanced machine learning methods to solve problems within autonomous driving. The work will include programming, machine learning and vehicle simulation, so an interest in these technologies is important.

The thesis is recommended for two students with a strong background in data science, machine learning and Python. The work will be carried out at Volvo Group Trucks Technology, Göteborg, Sweden, with a start date in January 2025. The thesis work is 30 higher education credits (ECTS).
