Background

Today the D4/D6 engines have a water-cooled exhaust manifold that is very complex in its design, complicated to produce and expensive. ​

Today, the turbo is located in one end of the exhaust manifold. This is not the optimal position for performance. ​

Volvo Penta would like to investigate the possibility of a dry exhaust manifold and positioning of the turbo for optimal performance and lower cost.​

Thesis work objective

Optimization of exhaust manifold and turbo positioning for improved performance and lower cost​

Surfaces of the manifold and turbine may not exceed 200°C​

Minimize energy loss between combustion chamber and turbine housing​

Improve fuel efficiency for complete engine​



Activities: ​

Market study of existing efficient exhaust manifold designs​

Design study of exhaust manifold geometry​

Material investigation for optimal material selection​

Investigation efficient heat isolation systems or materials​

CAD design of optimal exhaust manifold​

CAE flow and energy analysis with collaboration with CAE department​

Qualification and Personal Profile

You should possess these qualifications:​

BSc/MSc student in any of the following fields​

Design and Product development​

Mechanical Engineering​

Or equivalent education​

Knowledge in 3D CAD software​

Material science​
