Job description

Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport solutions for the future? If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

What you will do

Volvo Penta is investigating and developing technology and solutions to offer driver assistance and automation functions in marine products intended for both commercial and leisure business segments.

One of Volvo Penta’s guiding principles for marine products is the concept of Easy Boating which aims to simplify the boating experience and make it more accessible regardless of the operator’s skills and experience.

To be able to develop such features efficiently and with the required quality a data driven approach to software development, verification and validation is required.

Thesis work objective:

• The main objective is to define a data driven framework for specification, development, fine tuning, testing and validation of Driver assistance and automation functions for marine applications that Volvo Penta then can leverage to develop market leading products in this area.

• State of the art for such frameworks used in the automotive and commercial vehicle industries to develop ADAS and Autonomous driving technology (other industries or technology areas which could be relevant can be considered).

• Analysis of the marine applications and understanding of the specificities (constraints, challenges, opportunities).

• Proposal of the development framework including:

·  Methodology for the specification of the performance of the systems (e.g. using Key Performance Indicators) and the operating domain boundaries
·  Methodology to monitor the progress of the system under development throughout the development cycle (development, fine tuning & validation)
·  Methodology to specify the test data needed to secure the monitoring of the performance across the development given certain confidence levels (e.g. type of data, diversity, amount, labels/reference and other attributes).
·  Identify the needed capabilities in terms of SW tools, equipment, servers, etc
