Job description

A Process Engineer is expected to assist in a range of tasks and deliver to agreed objectives (performance, cost, timescale). These tasks will include:

· Capital Projects management
· Process support for production team, trouble shooting and process optimisation
· Act as site key user for plant control systems as well as surfactant process knowledge for the site key products (Miranol, Betaines and Amine Oxides)
· Contribute to process safety studies
· Development of new technology for existing products
· Development and scale-up of new products
· Technical and HSE auditing
· Technical assistance to Business Unit
· Provide process technology support both internally and externally
Responsibilities

· Capital & Project Management;
· Investment design project definition in conjunction with with R&I, Engineering, and the Technology team of the GBU
· Participate in the determination of the technical feasibility and the economic value of a project or study.
· Manage assigned projects or subprojects under supervision of the manager; take corrective actions when necessary.
· Define and supervise projects and studies conducted by others.
· Determine the technical feasibility and appraise the economic value of projects.
· Manage project results, timing and cost
· Assist in compiling design reports and other engineering documentation
· Perform process engineering design calculations
· Produce process flow diagrams
· Prepare design specifications and liaise with equipment suppliers
· Produce process control functional specifications
· Production Support:
· Execute studies about plant performance, production capacity utilisation, and the effectiveness of process improvement projects.
· Provide expertise in process and instrumentation / control system, and automation, including technical standards
· Assist in plant commissioning/plant trials
· Maintain awareness of current industry practise, new equipment etc
· Communicate with site project engineers, chemists, marketing personnel and site-based contractors
· Quality & Safety
· Contribute to the development of a strong safety and well-being culture, lead and participate in site/company, behavioural safety programs
· Assist with site HSE/EA related activities (eg. Safety and Quality studies, environmental assessments)
· Ensure compliance with all Solvay and external agency HSE regulations
· Maintain awareness of current industry regulations (HSE, EA etc)

Desired profile

·  Qualified to degree level in Chemical Engineering, with a good knowledge of Chemical Engineering operations (reaction, distillation, extraction L/L, drying, crystallisation) and associated technologies, knowledge of thermodynamic and science of heat / cold generators, boilers … and knowledge of fluid mechanics
·  Experience within a chemical manufacturing environment, specifically in Surfactant processes
·  To operate within and maintain all appropriate Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality standards in order to ensure that the products and services provided by the site comply with regulatory and company standards and customer expectations
·  Additional qualification(s) in Health and Safety (IOSH/NEBOSH) would be desirable
·  Knowledge of Responsible Care (HSE, SCMS) and HSE Regulations (CMR, EPA permit / IPPC / SEVESO, ATEX/DSEAR) and Quality norms (ISO, GMP, automotive), and knowledge of Safety Process tools and techniques is required.
·  Demonstrated supervision and engineering experience in the chemical process industry incorporating batch processes specifically in Surfactant chemicals.
·  Excellent project management skills including the ability to structure technical-economical plans whilst understanding the financial concepts, data and analysis and the ability to define and use budgeting and cost control.
·  Excellent leadership and organisational skills to manage, motivate and develop personnel and to facilitate co-operation between departments.
·  Experience of continuous improvement methods and problem solving techniques.
·  Experience of developing and driving a Safety Culture
·  Experience in behavioural safety
·  Ability to use SAP (PU/PP/IM/QM, BW), MES / PIMS, ASPEN, scientific IT tools and databases
·  The role will be located at our Halifax site, UK
