Job description

Internship : Techno-economic study officer - Direct Carbon Removal - F/H

Technip Energies - Together, pushing back the boundaries to shape a sustainable future

Technip Energies is a leading engineering and technology company serving the energy transition, with leading positions in Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), hydrogen and ethylene, and a strong presence in the growth markets of blue and green hydrogen, sustainable chemistry, floating offshore wind turbines and CO2 capture and storage. The company benefits from its solid project delivery model, supported by an extensive offering of technologies, products and services.

Backed by our commitments to Diversity & Inclusion and Sustainable Development (here), with a presence in 35 countries, our 15,000 employees are fully committed to bringing our customers' innovative projects to life, pushing back the boundaries of what is possible to accelerate the energy transition to a better future.

Technip Energies is a leading engineering and technology company dedicated to the energy transition.

Proposed missions :

You will work within the Technology and Innovation organization, a team of technology managers and experts whose mission, under the responsibility of the CTO, is to drive innovations, explore new concepts and/or partnerships, develop technologies, and oversee R&D programs through to industrialization and market launch.

Among the solutions identified as necessary to achieve carbon neutrality objectives is the direct elimination of CO2 from the air. This can take several forms: "nature-based" capture methods, such as reforestation or soil cultivation and management; technological methods, such as direct capture from ambient air or indirect capture from the ocean; and hybrid methods, such as advanced cultivation, bioenergy with CO2 capture and sequestration (BECCS) or mineralization.

The objectives of the internship will be :

Develop a techno-economic model of direct capture technologies using solid adsorbents.
Integrate it into a broader economic analysis model for the entire "Direct Air Capture and Carbon Sequestration (CCS) or Carbon Utilisation (CCU)" value chain, taking into account other energy components (renewable energies, different types of hydrogen production, life-cycle aspects).
Analyze the benefits of CCS and CCU value chains, involving Direct Air Capture by adsorption.

To achieve this, your various tasks will involve building :

A Direct Air Capture Adsorption Model:

In coordination with technology managers, T&I, select a case study to develop a model for analyzing direct air capture processes by solid adsorption and build the adsorption model.
Explore the scientific literature and the various technology offerings and value propositions of start-up's targeting in particular future markets for negative carbon emissions.
Evaluate the interest of solutions proposed by developers, start-ups and available technologies, worldwide, with T&I technology managers. The model will be one of the tools used to confirm their relevance.

An analysis of the CCS and CCU value chains

Based on "solid" DAC technologies, propose a model for analyzing the CCS and CCU value chain, taking into account the production of renewable energy feeding CO2 storage or utilization.
Methodologically establish the model and the technical-economic sensitivities for the case study.
Analyze the results with the technology managers and draw conclusions as to the interest of solid DAC in the CCS and CCU value chains. )
Write a summary report.
Present the results of the study.
Prepare and participate in communication presentations on the conclusions.

What we expect from you:

·  5 years' higher education, generalist school with a specialization in energy, ENSTA, PSL (ENSPCI, ENSCP).
·  Solid technical knowledge of key energy topics (production, transport, distribution, use, carbon intensity and resources, etc.) as well as economic analysis of industrial projects.
·  Strong appetite for innovation, especially technological innovation.
·  Autonomy, proactivity, interactivity and ability to synthesize arguments and analyses.
·  Curiosity, ease with scientific literature and rigor in data analysis.
·  Organizational skills for breaking down and planning work, structuring responses or intermediate results.
·  Creativity to solve problems, overcome uncertainties and information gaps.

You have knowledge of energy transition, initial experience (internships, study projects, jobs, etc.) in the energy transition sector and a strong interest in decarbonization issues.

You have good communication skills (interfaces with multiple players) and are at ease in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary environment.

·  Fluent English required.

During this internship, you will be accompanied by a tutor to answer any questions you may have. This internship will give you the opportunity to develop your skills and knowledge.
