We are currently seeking a high caliber professional to join our team as  Principal Engineer - Securities Financing Technology.

Our global technology teams work closely with HSBC’s Equities and Securities Financing (ESF) Front office to design and build solutions that allow our Markets customers around the world, to utilise our services quickly, simply and securely. We work in agile DevOps teams with colleagues around the world.  

We are investing heavily across in Technology and our Platforms and to accelerate achieving our vision we are seeking an experienced Chief Engineer to join the ESF Technology Leadership Team. This is a global role based in either Hong Kong, Guangzhou or Pune, with travel as required.  

About Equities and Securities Financing Technology

The Equities & Securities Financing Chief Engineer will join a global team of a thousand Technologists designing and implementing solutions to drive a successful Capital Markets business. Equities & Securities Financing Technology is a global department within Markets & Securities Services (MSS) Technology at HSBC. ESF has teams in Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Pune, Krakow, Paris, London, New York and Toronto which support businesses covering Equities Electronic Trading, Delta One and Flow Trading, Equity Derivatives, Prime Cash & Synthetic Financing, Stock Borrow/Loan, Repos, Futures Execution and Derivatives Clearing. The organization is rapidly transforming both its people structure and ways of working to better align with our clients and increase the speed and quality of delivery. We are deep into a continual improvement culture driving agile delivery through DevOps teams and building a strong product ownership group in the front office of our business.

The Opportunity:

Trusted Engineering advisor to the CIO of Equities and Securities Financing Technology, Lee Freyberg.  

The Chief Engineer is accountable to the CIO of ESF Technology and will support end-to-end execution of the technology strategy as it aligns to the overall Markets Tech strategy but with a specific focus on:

·  Hands-on engineering on major programme delivery
·  Providing engineering thought leadership across our global engineering community.
·  Working with our Software community and leading SWAT for critical issues or engineering problems 
·  To drive a measurable uplift in software development quality, as a key lead in the Engineering Standards function.
·  To help define standards and practices and provide an oversight of assurance of engineering against our technical principles and strategy
·  Lead our Principal Engineering Practice of equivalent Director level Engineers to demonstrate what good looks like to our aspiring engineering community 

Technology / programming language is not a barrier to getting things done – the Chief Engineer will typically be polyglot and have no issues with learning on the job and will have a natural understanding for the core technical skills instead of specific frameworks allowing them to be very diverse in what they can do.  

The successful candidate will provide a pivotal role in delivery to HSBC Technology’s overall strategy but specifically within the technology delivery teams of ESF. This will include championing smaller, faster, safer change to production and transforming our ways of working and driving continuous improvement initiatives.  

What you will do:

The Chief Engineer is responsible for working across the Technology teams and Delivery Lifecycle including inception, construction, testing, release and on-going management of a product or service within pods.

This role will carry out some or all of the following activities:

·  Evangelise the customer in every conversation and decision, be passionate about their needs and continually strive to improve their experience.
·  Understand platform challenges and connecting the dots between issues. Compare and contrast different technical solutions and recommend/deliver the most optimal ones to meet business requirements.
·  Focus on system resilience and educate the organisation on all the aspects this entails. Eg failsafe, controls from inceptions, Cyber, etc...
·  Provide technical leadership across the end-to-end delivery and run lifecycle, utilising their skills and expertise to carry out software development.
·  Liaise with other engineers, architects, and business stakeholders to understand and drive the product, platform  or service’s direction.
·  Establish a technology environment and automate processes to minimize variation and ensure predictable high-quality code and data. 
·  Ensure Engineers have the tools to build service resilience, service sustainability and recovery time objectives are met for all the software solutions delivered. 
·  Drive automating the continuous integration / continuous delivery pipeline within a DevOps Product/Service team driving a culture of continuous improvement. 
·  Keep up to date and have expertise on current tools, technologies and areas like cyber security and regulations pertaining to aspects like data privacy, consent, data residency etc. 
·  Work with industry groups/peers and vendors outside of HSBC to establish and maintain HSBC's involvement and influence in the engineering space. 
·  Promote innovation and adoption of cutting edge specialist technologies and practices with the domain and across HSBC 
·  Work with the Engineering Practice to promote development of engineers through coaching, and mentoring.
·  Identify as an authority for specific engineering disciplines providing steer/assistance to programmes or projects that require it. 

Requirements

What you will need to succeed in the role:

·  Extensive years of experience in developing and implementing software solutions
·  Gravitas and ability to interact with and advise senior executives
·  Experience in working in an Agile environment with a strong focus on developing engineering solutions
·  Proven ability to improve developer productivity – through automation, reusability and advanced technical skills
·  Strong leadership skills, team-builder and influencer
·  Exposure and success working within a global matrix organization model
·  Proven track record in developing, managing and implementing effective stakeholder management strategies
·  Ability to think laterally and innovatively and find creative solutions, with a proactive approach to problem solving and delivery
·  Ability to understand business issues and devise solutions that deliver results, constructing fresh approaches where appropriate and making connections to other issues
·  Able to work within an ambiguous environment, prioritize and reconcile competing demands and resolve complex issues
·  Great attention to detail and an ability to identify and manage risk
·  Highly experienced in getting the best out of people at various levels

This role may be based Hong Kong, Guangzhou or Pune.
