JOB DESCRIPTION:

Abbott Neuromodulation develops advanced medical implants and accessories for the stimulus of the nervous system to help patients suffering from chronic pain and motion disorders.  We are on the forefront of implantable device miniaturization and data science for improved patient outcomes.  Through advanced embedded systems and external mobile device apps, we create an ecosystem for developing rapid advancements in the field of neuromodulation through modern data science and analysis.

The System Architect works independently to architect new, best in class, implantable and external neuromodulation systems and devices for the treatment of either chronic pain or neurological disorders.  The Architect works in a fast-paced cross-functional design environment, using the latest technologies and industry practices.  They are responsible for defining the interfaces and interactions between complex components of a Neuromodulation system including but not limited to system architecture, design of algorithms, data management, electro-mechanical interfaces, communication protocols, and cybersecurity.  They will provide instruction, oversight, and mentoring to other engineers and will push for excellence in themselves and the team.

Job Responsibilities

  • Owns the system architecture design and implementation within R&D group from design initiation through commercial launch
  • Supports the system requirement team in the generation and allocation of design input.
  • Works with the functional design team architects (EE/ME/FW/SW) to guide the detailed design implementation.
  • Provides input to the system validation and verification team on test case/methodology development.
  • Applies advanced engineering and scientific principles to architect and implement a system design that reduces design risk and optimizes design features
  • Develops/utilizes models, characterization testing, analysis methods, and statistics to optimize designs
  • Creatively solves ultra-low power design challenges
  • Performs tasks independently while effectively utilizing other team members
  • Mentors, trains, and leads other engineers
  • This is a non-supervisory role

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in biomedical, electrical, computer engineering or related field. 12+ years of related work experience with a complete understanding of specified functional area, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Vast experience in the successful delivery of complex technology programs
  • Experience developing products in a regulated environment, medical device industry is a plus
  • Preferred: 15+ years of experience in R&D development, including the system design and integration of complex multi-discipline systems. 5+ years of experience as a technical lead system engineer
  • Experience in the design of complex embedded systems including software design, communication protocol design, and control systems
  • Experience with data analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence algorithms
  • Well versed in Agile development methods and best practices
  • Experiencing designing medical devices according to IEC60601 and ISO14708-1 compliance standards
  • Experience planning project deliveries, milestones, and schedules and leading sub-teams in the delivery of system design tasks
  • Collaborative, team oriented, business leader
  • Strong written, verbal, and communication skills

Desired Qualifications

  • Masters’ degree in biomedical, electrical, computer engineering or related field
  • Participation on industry committee and compliance standard boards
  • Written publications related to the system design of complex systems
