This position works out of our Plano, TX location in the Neuromodulation division.

This opportunity directly supports Abbott’s Neuromodulation business, a fast-growing business, offering the most innovative Spinal Cord and Deep Brain Simulation platforms in the market. Abbott’s Neuromodulation business has a large Product Development site in Plano (Dallas), Texas, where this position is based. The neurotechnology research scientist is responsible for developing and providing subject matter expertise on neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, and the interface of technologies with neural structures. This scientist will need to show a strong interest in learning the detailed functions of the central and peripheral nervous system, evaluate and critique information from journal articles, patents, and textbook sources, and form and test hypotheses about the mechanisms of action of neuromodulation technologies. The scientist provides technical expertise, playing a vital role in innovating, designing, enhancing, testing, and implementing technologies that connect with the nervous system. The scientist also works closely with the business to understand what constitutes a successful product design and claims related to that design and its mechanism of action. The scientist also develops scientific experiments to substantiate those claims. By developing and sharing their expertise, the scientist ensures that rigorous and valid scientific information is being used to back data-driven decisions.

What You’ll Work On

·  Responsible for developing a deep understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system, including an understanding of the function and interactions between neurons, support cells, inflammatory processes, populations of neurons, and neural pathways.
·  Responsible for developing a deep understanding of different disease states and the various theories for how these pathologies develop.
·  Bring expertise in technical writing, presentation skills, organization of research, and literature summaries.
·  Design and carry out research studies to answer key questions related to neuroscience and neurophysiology and medical device mechanism of action.
·  Help to develop a vision for new neurotechnology products in an agile, fast moving environment
·  Perform research and discovery using best practices and maintain a highly organized database of literature and information about neuroscience topics
·  Coordinate knowledge sharing and brainstorming related to neuroscience and neurophysiology across the organization
·  Assess complex technical challenges, and define the solutions required to make forward progress without sacrificing integrity and quality
·  Works with cross-functional teams, product management, development, quality and operations to create innovative presentations, hypotheses, and research studies that form the overall strategy and business architecture
·  Engage non-technical business stakeholders to understand business needs to define technical topics and innovate next generation products.
·  Interface with external partners to design, execute, and present research studies
·  Mentor cross-functional teams on neuroscience, neurophysiology, neuroanatomy, and psychology
·  Contribute to team excellence by identifying and correcting erroneous statements, incorrect information, and logical flaws that may be presented by others
·  Support execution of clinical and preclinical studies including work with cross-functional teams to develop study objectives, study documentation, and study processes that lead to successful collection of data and fulfilment of research objectives
·  Provide data to senior management on the new trends in neuromodulation and brain-computer interfaces. Serves as technical expert on new products in these areas.
·  Present scientific hypotheses, research information, and results both internally and externally including at conferences and with research institutions.
·  Develops a strong understanding of past neuromodulation technologies that have been attempted and the root causes of the failures
·  Maintains a strong ability to understand logic and precision of speech to support a rationale and logical path of thought
·  Learns to identify logical fallacies and avoid common research pitfalls

Required Qualification

·  Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering (with neural experience), Neuroscience, Psychology, or other related technical field. Master's degree or PhD in a technical field preferred.
·  2+ years of experience as an engineer or scientist contributing to development of neuromodulation products or execution of pre-clinical or clinical research (inclusive of research fellowships and internships).
·  Experience with the components of neuromodulation systems including design, testing, manufacturing, or quality documentation.
·  Experience with the basic tactics of designing and executing research studies.
·  Demonstrated knowledge of the medical device design process and the complexities of interfacing medical products with human anatomy and behavior.
·  Basic understanding of statistical methods for analyzing and drawing conclusions from research data
·  Ownership mentality and ability to independently manage complex initiatives and projects and proactively seek solutions to problems that might arise.
·  Solid verbal, written, and interpersonal skills with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization. Excellent communication and relationship skills, especially the ability to articulate advanced technical topics to non-technical individuals
·  Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects
·  Ability to contribute to multiple projects/demands simultaneously
·  Ability to work both within a team, and independently, in a fast-paced, changing environment
·  Very strong technical leadership and ability to constantly build, leverage and influence large network of senior technology and business experts across a large, diverse enterprise, and outside: vendors, standards bodies, analysts, and academia
·  Preferred experience - clinical research, pre-clinical research, statistical programming

The base pay for this position is
$57,300.00 – $114,700.00
