JOB DESCRIPTION:

SUMMARY: 

This is an exciting opportunity to join Abbott's fast growing Structural Heart business unit in Menlo Park, home of the life-saving MitraClip medical device. The R&D Engineer for Product Development is responsible for designing and developing implanted medical devices and delivery systems. The role has a focus on implant design.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Researches, develops, designs, and evaluates medical device implants and delivery systems.
• Develops new concepts from initial design to market release.
• Investigates and evaluates existing technologies.
• Maintains detailed documentation throughout all phases of development.
• Works on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors.
• Exercises judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting deigns, methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree in a technical field, preferably mechanical or biomedical engineering.
• Advanced degree preferred. 
• Minimum of two years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and work experience

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:

• Experience in SolidWorks or other CAD software, experience with assembly modeling a plus.
• Medical implant design experience preferred.
• Familiar with common materials and practices to produce medical devices.
• Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization.
• Multitasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in timely manner.
• Strong organizational and follow-up skills, as well as attention to detail.
• Will perform this job in a quality system environment.
