The Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity to join Abbott's fast-growing STRUCTURAL HEART (SH) business unit in PLYMOUTH, MN, home of the life-saving Amplatzer family of medical devices. We are seeking an experienced, high caliber Sr. R&D Engineer for designing and developing implanted medical devices and delivery systems in our Structural Heart (SH) Division. Our business purpose is to restore health and improve quality of life through the design and provision of device and management solutions for the treatment of structural heart disease

As Senior R&D Engineer , you will be part of our Structural Heart research and development team focused on Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion .  This role will be focused on development of catheter-based devices and accessories but will also involve a range of responsibilities including but not limited to test method development, build and bench testing, design of test fixtures, design analysis, 3D CAD models and documentation, material research, prototype design, manufacturing support and interface with the R&D and cross functional product development team.

What You'll Work On

·  Researches, develops, designs, and evaluates mechanical materials, components, assemblies, processes and/or equipment.
·  May lead a project team.
·  Effectively communicate with cross functional and R&D team members.
·  Conceive and build working prototypes.
·  Utilize multidisciplinary engineering knowledge and experience to design and develop new products specific for catheter-based technology. 
·  Support bench / animal testing and clinical evaluations.
·  Establish test methods and conduct model development, as needed.
·  Establish product requirements and specifications.
·  Run empirical and experimental analysis utilizing various analytical design tools.
·  Ensure compliance with procedural and documentation requirements of Abbott, FDA , ISO and other regulatory bodies.
·  Provide guidance for the design and development of company products. 
·  Work closely with product development team to establish product development goals while ensuring market compatibility.
·  Plan, schedule and coordinate project tasks and activities.
·  Utilize structured problem-solving approaches to resolve design investigations during development.
·  Write and submit intellectual property (patents).
·  Work with outside consultants, vendors, machinists and the medical community.
·  Create and maintain 3D CAD models, assemblies and prints.

Required Qualifications

·  Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering/related degree
·  5+ years of engineering experience, preferably in Research & Development engineering in medical device or other highly regulated industry/ Master’s degree may substitute for two years of experience
·  Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization
·  Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast-paced, changing environment.
·  Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment.
·  Ability to multitask, prioritize and meet deadlines in timely manner.
·  Strong organizational skills, as well as attention to detail.

Preferred Qualifications

·  Experience in designing nitinol and/or catheter based devices.
·  Experience leading and performing design verification testing.
·  Experience with a variety of manufacturing processes and designing for manufacturability.

The base pay for this position is
$72,700.00 – $145,300.00

In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
