The Opportunity
This position works out of our Plano, TX location in the Neuromodulation division .

As the Principal Research Engineer you will be a Physician-Facing Neurological Computer Interface (NCI) Research Scientist and a critical link between the clinical and academic worlds accelerating productization. NCI is the fusion of advanced technology interfacing with the human nervous system and the physiology of the body.
What You’ll Work On
· As an individual technical contributor, you will be working with a world-class team translating the needs of physicians and patients into actionable research agendas that lead to commercially viable NCI solutions.
· By participating in and understanding the NCI vision, foresight will allow you to drive strategic research direction by identifying high-potential NCI applications with clear clinical pathways to market.
· Artificial Intelligence is a key component to NCI and in this role you will drive the entire life cycle from conception to deployment.
· You will be a subject matter expert in AI and will champion the risks and ethics of these systems.
· Collaborate with academic scientists and industry partners worldwide to design and conduct rigorous research, including prototypes, pre-clinical and clinical trials, evaluating NCI solutions in real-world settings, focusing on neuroscience and technology applications.
· Disseminating research findings through impactful publications, presentations at prestigious neuroscience and technology conferences, and engaging workshops for both physicians and academic audiences.
· Bridging the communication gap between clinicians and researchers, ensuring clear understanding and mutual respect for each other's expertise.
· Identifying and addressing ethical concerns and challenges related to Al implementation in healthcare, ensuring patient safety and informed consent.
· Developing development and testing efficiencies with Al, educational resources and training programs for Abbott team members, physicians and researchers to foster collaboration and build capacity in utilizing Al for decision-making and research.
Required Qualifications
· Bachelor's degree or higher in a relevant field (e.g., computer science, engineering, data science) or extensive experience in neuromodulation and research.
· 10 years of significant product life cycle experience.
Ideal Candidate
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to build rapport and trust with diverse stakeholders.
· Strong understanding of both clinical practice and the research process.
· Possesses a strong understanding of intellectual property landscape and regulatory pathways to ensure smooth translation of research findings into marketable NCI products.
· Passion for innovation, learning and a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing healthcare today.
· Demonstrated expertise in the design and manufacturing of one or more of the following: ultra-low power subsystems, digital imaging technology, implantable design including leads and implantable pulse generators.
· Expertise around low power systems including but not limited to uC and digital imaging.
· Experience in system engineering and interdisciplinary collaboration is a plus.
· Available for up-to 25% travel and extensive communication.
· You will be a subject matter expert in AI and partner with AI architects while you champion the risks and ethics of these systems.

The base pay for this position is
$125,300.00 – $250,700.00
