JOB DESCRIPTION:
Abbott in IrelandIn Ireland, Abbott employs almost 3,000 people across 11 sites. Abbott has six manufacturing facilities located in Clonmel, Cootehill, Donegal, Longford and Sligo and a third party manufacturing management operation in Sligo. It has commercial and support operations in Dublin and shared services in Dublin and Westport. Abbott serves the Irish market with a diverse range of health care products including diagnostics, medical devices, nutritionals and branded generic pharmaceuticals. Abbott has been operating in Ireland since 1946.
Abbott Ireland Diagnostic Division – Longford:
Abbott established a diagnostics manufacturing facility in Sligo in 1994 to manufacture blood-screening products and reagents.
In 2004, Abbott's operations in Ireland expanded with the opening of a second facility in Longford. The plant was first occupied in December 2004, and the first product (Architect® TSH) was launched in December of 2005.
The Longford facility plays a key role in helping Abbott to meet the increasing global demand for diagnostic testing in areas such as infectious disease, cancer, thyroid and cardiovascular diseases.
Abbott in Longford manufactures 18 diagnostic reagent products for thyroid function, fertility, and pregnancy, cardiology, renal and metabolic. Our products are manufactured to the highest standards of quality and are regulated by bodies such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
We currently have an open position for an Instrumentation Engineer and the role will involve the following:
Safety
Ensure EHS Standards are met and all EHS regulations and procedures adhered to. Foster safety awareness in the plant and promote a culture of continuous improvement.
Department Function/
Objective
To provide a Facilities and Manufacturing Engineering service to the plant, in order to maximise the availability of Plant and Manufacturing Equipment. To ensure continual compliance with the policies relating to Personnel, Quality, Engineering, Safety and Finance. To control all relevant engineering budgets. To develop the Engineering team with the emphasis on continual operational improvements and employee development.
Primary function
- To perform the day to day preventative and demand maintenance activities to maintain plant test instruments and lab equipment.
- To plan, organise and implement the planned calibration program.
- To maintain records and documentation on relevant procedures.
- To liaise with Internal/External Laboratory Engineering Personnel and contract maintenance providers in maintaining, trouble shooting, and installing equipment.
- To coordinate the implementation of instrumentation and calibration projects.
- To manage inventory of spare parts.
- To train instrumentation users on correct use of instruments and basic troubleshoot.
Reporting
This position reports to the Instrument Engineering Unit/Team Leader.
Supervisory/ Management Responsibility
· This position does not have Supervisory responsibility.
· However it involves contacts with all levels of management within
the plant.
· Contacts with customers as required and with external auditors e.g.,
ISO.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- The day-to-day demand and preventative maintenance and problem solving of test instruments and lab equipment.
- To develop and maintain a stock of spare parts for instruments.
- The completion and recording of functional and safety checks on test instruments and correction of any deviations from specification.
- Completion of installation and validation of new and upgraded test instruments.
- Ensure instrument manuals/ software are kept up to date.
- Preparation of engineering metrics as requested.
- Establish with Area Team Leader/ Manager the department goals.
- Ensure Safety Standards are met and safe-working practices adhered to. Foster and lead continuous improvement to the culture of safety. Recommend/implement improvements to safety standards.
- Ensure good laboratory practices are maintained.
- Preparation of Capital Expenditure Requests for test instruments and calibration equipment.
- Support the Engineering Team in ensuring that equipment is maintained to meet the required legal, divisional and corporate standards.
- Liaise with Division Engineering as required.
- Coordinate the calibration of equipment and ensure compliance with calibration requirements for both Plant and Manufacturing equipment.
- Ensure completion of appropriate in house calibration.
- Identify and implement CIP's as appropriate.
- Ensure External contractors are managed and supervised.
- Ensure the effective management of appropriate internal and external plant projects.
- Completion of all required documentation associated with instruments/lab equipment/calibration in a timely fashion.
- Any other relevant duties as requested by the Area Team Leader/Coordinator/Manager.
- Bring to attention of relevant management any risk in product/test operations, which may have adverse effects on product quality/safety.
- Training of instrument users in the application and troubleshooting of the various instruments and lab equipment.
- Liaise with outside technical instrument support as required.
- To ensure that documents in the area of responsibility are kept up to date with the current practices and quality standard requirements.
- Complete all activities in a safe manner ensuring that any potential safety issues and areas for improvement are highlighted to Area Team Leader/Coordinator/Manager.
- Ensure Environmental procedures eg recycling, waste minimization are adhered to and improvements made where possible.

· Demonstrate leadership skills by carrying out responsibilities to the highest possible standards, ensuring compliance with all quality, safety and Engineering procedures.
Interpersonal Skills
· An ability to work with all levels of Management.
· Open communication with peers and other departments.
· External contacts with Contractors / Engineering in US and other sites.
Education
- A trade cert or third level qualification in engineering or related discipline to provide the foundation necessary to understanding engineering principles and develop on-going engineering skills.
Experience/ Background
- Minimum of two years relevant experience in an engineering role, ideally some of which will be in instrument maintenance.
- Must be self-starter with ability to organise and work within a team.
- Familiar with computers.
This experience is necessary to ensure the skills, management expertise and problem solving techniques have been acquired.
Problem solving
- Must be able to execute mechanical and electrical trouble shooting of instrumentation.
- Must be able to execute basic re-design or modification of instrumentation to achieve continuous improvement.
- Must be able to initiate and communicate solutions to re-occurring problems effectively.
Accountability
- Considerable and continual care and attention needed to avoid substantial damage to equipment. Losses could be significant.
- Continual attention needed to ensure plant reaches its annual production plan. Significant loss in production and output resulting from not being careful.
- Failure on the incumbents part not to exercise due care could cause repeated small losses or occasional damage.
Scope of Authority
- Has set goals to achieve, which are reviewed periodically.
- Receives general instructions from Area Team Leader/Coordinator/ Manager as to the manner to which duties should be performed.
- Incumbent has responsibility to maintain plant instrumentation in an efficient and safe manner.
