Job description

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Abbott is a global healthcare leader that helps people live more fully at all stages of life. Our portfolio of life-changing technologies spans the spectrum of healthcare, with leading businesses and products in diagnostics, medical devices, nutritionals and branded generic medicines. Our 103,000 colleagues serve people in more than 160 countries.

Abbott Point of Care is a worldwide leader in providing with-patient care solutions that are intuitive, reliable, and cost-effective for our customers. By delivering lab-quality results in minutes, our i-STAT® System family of with-patient products and services fosters a collaborative, patient-centered environment while driving operational performance. We are headquartered in Princeton, New Jersey, with more than 1,500 global employees and a presence in 84 countries. Our 46,500 square metre, state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, Abbott Pointe, is in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

Status: Temporary/Full Time (12 month contract)

Position Overview:
As a member of our New Product Introduction (NPI) Engineering Team, you will play a key role in launching capable new assays/chips/cartridges for use with our i-STAT analyzers, including our new i-STAT Alinity analyzer.

The chip manufacturing process starts with a 6” silicon wafer upon which, at an external foundry, a SiO2 layer is thermally grown. A TiW adhesion layer, then a platinum layer, is sputtered to form a TiWPt bilayer and is further patterned to form electrodes. Within our Fab area at APOC, mechanically- and chemically-selective films are then coated and patterned over the active regions of the sensors. Processed wafers are mounted on frames and diced into chips.

In the Print/Inspect area, ion-selective membranes are applied to each individual chip by pneumatically or jet dispensing a solution onto the wafer surface using wafer printers (high speed micro-dispense platforms).

There are many manufacturing considerations for this process stage, such as:

• Solution management: lifetime, storage, reheating, formulation;

• Micro-dispensability: droplet size, print rate, print environment;

• Print real-estate: polyimide or photoresist print rings, surface chemistry;

• Quality measurements: thickness, visual inspection;

• Post-print cure: storage, duration, environment, solvent evaporation.

After this print event, each chip is inspected on an automated inspection visual system for defects.

Responsibilities:

As a Process Engineer in NPI Engineering, focusing on Wafer Fab and Print/Inspect processes, your responsibilities will include:

  • Participating in process development with the goal of launching capable new products.
  • Conducting Design of Experiments to characterize new processes/products, determine critical-to-quality attributes and implement in-process measurements and specifications to ensure capable product performance.
  • Performing new equipment and process validations aimed at improving quality, yield, increasing capacity, or reducing cost.
  • Ensuring process and equipment changes are validated or verified according to current quality standards.
  • Providing timely root cause analysis to resolve product and process problems.
  • Collaborating effectively with R&D and Operations colleagues, maintaining excellent communication with partners and stakeholders.
  • Implementing new equipment, processes and products into manufacturing and performing regular review of control charts and implementing required changes to keep processes in control. Printed, inspected chips are assembled, along with other components, into cartridges. Our customers fill the sample well of the cartridge with a small volume of blood and insert the cartridge into an analyzer for accurate test results within minutes.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering/applied science, preferably chemical or mechanical engineering.
  • Proven analytical skills and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts and statistics.
  • Effective at dealing with a variety of people and understanding/communicating their requirements.
  • Self-directed, proactive and not easily discouraged.
  • Excellent organizational, planning and scheduling skills.
  • Good oral/written communication skills.
  • Experience in a manufacturing environment is considered an important asset.
