JOB DESCRIPTION:
Our location in Abbott Park, IL currently has an opportunity for Design to Cost Engineer. The Design to Cost Engineer is responsible to provide thought leadership for Design for Cost, including material and process analysis and design for value. Primary areas of focus will include but are not limited to: primary packaging, secondary packaging, injection molding, thermoforming, extrusion, blow molding, flexible film laminations, paper, sterilization. Constantly scan the technology and workmanship industry landscape to identify trends that can be incorporated into Abbott products. Design, build and test alternate solutions for Abbott Products. Identify and replicate best practices across multiple sub-assemblies, Abbott Products, and divisions. Work closely with key stakeholders (Package Development, Engineering, Research and Development, Quality, and Commercial) in both Corporate and Divisions.
WHAT YOU’LL DO

Explores competitive sourcing strategies.

Assist in defining category procurement strategy for Abbott- align with overall strategy and be an enabler.
·
Drive Total Cost of Ownership reductions through analytics and cost forensics methodology.
·
Build and execute fact-based negotiations strategies
·
Develop and manage cost modeling tools and database.
·
Interface with complex FDA approved diagnostics products
·
Identify potential strategic suppliers by vetting technical capabilities and cost
·
Perform product tear downs
·
Perform Value Add/Value engineering on medical products/devices and packaging systems
·
Develop engineering playbooks to evaluate package integrity for existing, emerging, and new products
·
Provide alternate design recommendations, including strategies on intellectual property ownership
·
Ensure recommendations consider compliance with ISO 13485, GMP, FDA, CE standards, RoHS & REACH
·
Coordinate across corporate, functions, and divisions to share best practices
·
Influence and partner with business leaders (Manager, Director) to manage and align the category.
·
Closely collaborate with adjacent business departments, and external partners to ensure adequate and timely delivery of agreed services, in line with agreed service levels.
·
Partner and collaborate with key One Procurement staff of Abbott divisions in order to support cross divisional business initiatives and explore Procurement synergies and efficiencies.
·
Build and maintain relationships with key suppliers.
·
Initiate a collaborative environment among stakeholders.
·
Maintain strong relationships across various functions demonstrate the value-add of leveraging and build enthusiasm and support for adoption.
·
Monitor market dynamics and technology across regions.
·
Continually look for opportunities to drive value creations, cost reduction and cost optimization.
·
Lead project teams
·
Confronts and deals with people issues in a constructive and timely manner.
·
Responsible for compliance with applicable Corporate and Divisional policies and procedures.
·
Financial implications of the Spend ranging up to $50MM. Cumulative Category budgets ranging up to $1-2MM.
·
Work and lead virtual team and project staff up to 10 people.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING
Required
·
Bachelor degree preferrably Engineering or technical equivalent, MBA a plus
·
Minimum 5 years of Engineering and/or Supply Chain experience in medical device and/or packaging industry
Preferred
·
Experience in Packaging, Polymer Science, or related field strongly preferred
·
Professional Certifications a plus: Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM), Certified Purchasing Manager (CPM), Project Management Professional (PMP)
·
Functional experience in Engineering, Quality, Supply Chain or Related field
·
Excellent analytical skills and ability to utilize MS Excel or other tools for reporting and trending
·
Strong program/project management skills
·
Strong communication skills (written and verbal)
·
Good interdisciplinary, intercultural, influence and networking skills
·
International experience a plus
·
Experience with supplier management a plus
·
Ability to develop actionable implementations plans
·
Relevant manufacturing process knowledge of Packaging, product protection, and related raw materials technologies and products
·
Negotiations skills
·
Experience leading teams – both with direct staff and indirect project teams
