Wheat Discovery Breeder (2001205) – Sabin, MN

Where the Chemistry Happens 

The Wheat Discovery Breeder leads applied research projects and operations for the identification, validation and deployment of native traits and the improvement of germplasm to support BASF hybrid wheat breeding strategy globally.

Manage the Wheat Discovery Breeding activities including greenhouse, field nursery and yield trial operations for North American spring wheat region, based from Sabin.

Initiate and supervise projects in collaboration with breeders and internal experts to identify and validate native traits and breeding methods, in the areas of hybrid wheat enablement, yield performance, disease resistance and quality traits.

Enable the implementation of Predictive Breeding into the commercial spring wheat breeding program.

Contribute to the identification and development of experimental germplasm relevant for Discovery Breeding and commercial breeding programs.

Collect phenotypic data, coordinate data analysis activities in collaboration with internal teams of experts (analytical labs, geneticists, biometricians) and communicate results.

Represent BASF wheat breeding in US collaborative projects for native trait discovery.

Ensure compliance with Safety, QMS and stewardship directives and quality standards. 

Formula for Success   

Master or PhD in Agricultural Sciences, Plant Breeding, / Molecular Breeding or related scientific areas

3+ years professional experience in plant breeding, molecular breeding, plant genetics or related scientific areas

Experience with conducting field trials and greenhouse experiments

Self-reliant development, planning and conducting of applied research projects

Ability to recruit, train and develop agronomists, contractors and temporary labor.

Supporting qualifications:

Experience with wheat cereal genetic resources and germplasm development

Strong background in quantitative genetics and genomics assisted breeding

Willingness to improve leadership skills by participating in relevant training programs

Excellent time-management and organizational skills

People management skills that include hiring, coaching and facilitating disciplinary action

Verbal and computer-aided communication skills

Experienced in using data analyses tools, knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Visio, Power Point.

Ability to travel domestically and internationally
