Description of the job
A vacancy for a Modem Waveform Systems Engineer has arisen within Airbus Defence & Space in Portsmouth.
The Modem Product Group is responsible for the Research and Development, design, implementation and subsequent support of advanced satellite modem products. As such the Group is involved in all aspects of satellite communications engineering, from leading-edge fundamental research of technologies, through Product Design to Consultancy
The Group has been extremely successful and as a result there is very high demand for its services. In response to continue this success, the group needs to expand and so new roles are available.
Amongst these roles is one for a Waveform System Engineer. This engineer would join a team that is very much engaged in understanding and developing technologies for future products and providing consultancy services for its customers.
The role is technically demanding but is in a supportive environment. Personal development within the team is always closely monitored with scope for future promotion.
The successful candidate will be subject to UK National Security Clearance in order to undertake related work in accordance with business needs.

Tasks & accountabilities
Your main tasks and responsibilities will include:
The Waveform Systems Engineer will be responsible for the design, development and testing of technically challenging products and demonstrations and will be able guide a small implementation team in realisation of these solutions. In addition, they will capable of providing expertise to the CoE and external customers in Waveform systems, their application and uses.
The Waveform System Engineer responsibilities will include (but not necessarily be limited to) the following:
· Guiding the Modem Implementation team(s) to ensure that modem solutions are correctly implemented;
· Lead the definition and implementation of verification and validation activities associated with these solutions;
· Help develop maintainable modem oriented skills within the Modem Group to support on-going and future modem developments;
· Soft-skills such as managing a small team of engineers in attaining complex functionality in short time scales, undertaking their annual performance reviews, identifying need for additional engineers, training needs etc.
This role will involve some travel for business and as such you must be able to travel accordingly.
Required skills
We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience:
Technical
· Ability to lead small team comprised of software and firmware engineers
· Waveform, DSP and Software Defined Radio background essential
· Embedded Software and Firmware/FPGA Engineering appreciation / experience
· Detailed knowledge Multiple Access MAC techniques and Synchronisation techniques
· Communications/Telecommunications/Satellite Communications background and/or expertise
· DVB-S2 and DVB-RCS2 waveform knowledge desirable
· Protected Waveform / Frequency Hopping knowledge desirable
· Experience in the definition of and through life development of Modem Products and/or solutions for Software Defined Radio platforms;
General
· Desirable to posses knowledge and application of SysML, DSP, Enterprise Architect, Clearcase, Clearquest, QAC+, Eclipse, GNU toolset
· Knowledge of Satcom communications products and services, as well as networking fundamentals.
· Must have the ability to work independently and be an effective contributor in a diversified team
· Must demonstrate creative problem solving skills.
· Must work well within a deadline-driven environment
