Bachelor Thesis student on “Exploring Next-Generation Current Source Inverters” (d/f/m)
Doktorarbeit München, GERMANY IT development
Job description
Job Description:
Are you passionate about power electronics and ready to investigate advanced inverter technologies? We offer an exciting Bachelor Thesis opportunity focusing on Current Source Inverters (CSIs) – a compelling alternative to traditional Voltage Source Inverters (VSIs) for high-performance applications like motor drives.
Your Mission :
Deep Dive & Compare : Conduct a thorough research study on CSI topologies. Analyze their advantages (e.g., inherent current limiting, improved voltage slopes) and disadvantages against VSIs, considering a range of modern semiconductor devices (IGBTs, MOSFETs, SiC, GaN).
·
Commutation is Key : Focus on the core of CSI operation – the commutation loop. Investigate, simulate, and theoretically design robust commutation strategies.
·
Semiconductor Frontiers : Analyze the suitability of novel wide-bandgap semiconductors (like GaN-FETs) for CSI applications. This includes exploring the design considerations for their unique gate drive requirements within the commutation path.
·
Current Source Foundations : Investigate and conceptually design the DC current source essential for CSI operation (e.g., based on a boost converter topology).
·
Pave the Way : Your research and design insights will provide crucial foundational knowledge for our demonstrator prototypes and future innovations in power conversion.
What You'll Bring ️:
·
A solid understanding of basic power electronics components and inverter topologies.
·
Proven experience in PCB design and layout (preferably in KiCAD). This is essential for the practical aspects of the thesis.
·
Proficiency and enthusiasm for circuit simulation using tools like PLECS and LTSpice, geared towards research and rapid prototyping.
·
A proactive, curious, and analytical approach to problem-solving.
·
Current enrollment in a relevant Bachelor's degree program (e.g., Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering).
What We Offer / You Will Gain :
·
Advanced Design Insights : Gain practical experience in PCB design, particularly for optimizing ultra-fast switching commutation loops in a research context.
·
Simulation Expertise : Deepen your simulation skills with PLECS and LTSpice, focusing on creating effective models for quick evaluation and demonstrator development.
·
Cutting-Edge Research : Explore the application of the latest semiconductor devices (SiC, GaN) in innovative inverter designs.
·
Mentorship : Receive close supervision and guidance from an experienced researcher within our dedicated power electronics team.
·
Impactful Contribution : Your work will directly contribute to our R&D efforts in developing next-generation power electronic demonstrators.
