We look forward to you joining us as an intern (d/f/m) (35 hours/week, flexi-time).

Location: Ottobrunn (near Munich)
Start:  Spring 2021
Duration:  Minimum 6 months

You will be working in the business division “Airbus Optical Instruments”. As Europe's largest manufacturer of optical payloads for space applications, our portfolio covers all types of optical instruments, e.g. imaging spectrometers, meteorological sounders, LIDARs, high resolution cameras, and optical communication terminals. In our technology development team, we prepare the next generation of optical payloads in Space.

Quantum technologies are a quickly advancing field on the boarder of physics and engineering that use the principles of quantum mechanics to allow for innovative applications. Their use in communication payloads on satellites has the potential to revolutionize communication security and to proof sensitive information against the emerging threat of quantum computers.

In the frame of the Master Thesis “Space-born Quantum Communication” you will have the chance to be part of the development of quantum communication systems for space and to mature this emerging field based on current and future needs.

We offer you some exciting tasks:

·         Understand the requirements on quantum communication payloads and the technical consequences of different implementations

·         Create the optical design concept for a quantum communication satellite payload

·         Design the optical bench of the payload

·         Simulate of the performance of the optical design

The following professional skills and assets are relevant for this position:

You are an enrolled full time student within Physics or similar field of study

You have a bachelor degree in physics or similar field of study with focus on optics.

You have experience in quantum physics and optical systems or experiments

You show interest in new space technologies and new payload applications

You are enthusiastic for new technologies

You are a good team player, have excellent communication skills, and are able to work independently

Your English is fluent
