Position Overview
This position is being considered for two different levels, depending on experience as outline below:
The Technical Support Engineer provides engineering guidance to troubleshoot and correct issues associated with the assembly, repair, and operation of engineered-to-order turbomachinery. This position provides technical guidance to global team members supporting Ingersoll-Rand, Clark, Dresser-Rand, DeLaval, Cooper, Rolls-Royce, Siemens, and other affiliate brand names The technical support provided will often include on-site support for clients and service centers globally to assist with time-critical, complex tasks. The role includes significant client interfacing responsibilities and is responsible to manage relationships in a manner that helps improve client satisfaction
The core machinery and support systems covered by this role include radial/axial compressors, expanders, centrifugal compressors, centrifugal pumps, and related auxiliary equipment. A successful technical support engineer will recognize and understand the unique design and operational requirements of our multiple product types and brands such that there is not always a one-size-fits-all approach. The TS engineer will be responsible for learning the intricate design details of multiple product lines and will support other PCC and regions in a timely manner.
The technical support engineering team plays a critical role by helping to maintain schedule commitments, support on-time delivery, reduce technical response cycle time, improve quality/reduce NC’s, participate in continuous improvement initiatives, and assist with RCA/FMEA investigations.
Excellent collaboration, communication, and alignment with the other Engineering Departments (Calculation/Design; Drafting/Design, Innovation, & Standard Business) both locally, as well as globally across different TCP operations is critical to this role.
Equally important to this role, is the growth experience this position offers the successful applicant beyond just the drafting/design management function. This position offers the applicant the ability to interact with the global Siemens TCP Organization and potentially expand their role.
Position reports to the manager of Technical Support Engineering.
Moderate domestic/international travel is required and can sometimes occur on very short notice.
This position will be located at the Siemens Gas and Power Engineering and Technology Center located in Olean, NY or Bethlehem, PA.
Responsibilities
· Work safely following all corporate / local procedures and timely completion of all required safety training
· Maintain accurate and organized engineering records
· Follow all processes and obtain necessary approvals where required
· Participate in recurring staff, production, quality meetings, as required
· Provide timely and accurate responses to technical support inquiries from internal and external clients
· Establish guidelines for and provide final engineering assessment and disposition of non-conforming components.
· Responsible for quality of support delivered; and ensuring support recommendations are in accordance established company and product standards
· Provide leadership and technical direction to global repair operations in the inspection and repair of turbomachinery.
· Establish scopes of work and recommended spares for turbomachinery repair activities.
· Perform systematic root cause analyses as a part of cross-functional teams investigating challenges. Identify corrective action required to improve designs and provide sound documentation of the investigation results.
· Design tooling and fixtures and/or select components for systems required to support routine or special project tasks.
· Identify and champion the implementation of product and service improvements to meet client needs.
· Develop and improve engineering standards for design, manufacturing, testing, and repair of turbomachinery.
· Execute field testing of turbomachinery and evaluate results.
· Participate in development, implementation, maintenance, and improvement of tools, standards, and processes
· Other miscellaneous duties to support the product lines success
Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience
· Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Mechanical, Aeronautical/Aerodynamic, Chemical, or equivalent degrees from an ABET accredited college/university will be considered)
· 2--5 years’ experience working with rotating machinery, e.g. centrifugal compressors, centrifugal pumps, axial compressors, hot gas expanders, auxiliary systems-Level 9
· 0-2 years’ experience working with rotating machinery, e.g. centrifugal compressors, centrifugal pumps, axial compressors, hot gas expanders, auxiliary systems- (High School Diploma/GED and appropriate experience)-Level 8
· Good organizational and time management skills
· Possess and demonstrate a high degree of tact and professionalism; and be capable of interacting with Management, Peers, Shop Personnel, and Clients
· Ability to work collaboratively and individually with the same enthusiasm and intensity.
· Ability and desire to promptly file technical notes/reports in an organized manner
· Strong analytical skills and the ability to be resourceful
· High attention to detail and big picture thinker
· Foundational knowledge of these subjects is required: machinery design, rotordynamics, strength-of-materials / solid mechanics, materials-of-construction selection, thermodynamics, aerodynamics, fluid dynamics
· Excellent communication, interpersonal, and writing skills
· Capable to work with same level of energy and enthusiasm as an individual investigator and team problem solver
· Solid computer literacy and experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power-Point) and basic 2D/3D CAD
· Proficiency with PLM (Team Center/Globus) and ERP system (SAP or Oracle).
· Willing and able to travel domestically and internationally with short notice (estimated 20-30% travel)

Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience
· Master’s degree in Engineering
· High level knowledge of these subjects is desirable: thermodynamics, aerodynamics, fluid dynamics, rotordynamics, strength-of-materials / solid mechanics, materials-of-construction selection, machinery design.
· Knowledge and understanding of Siemens / Dresser-Rand’s products and services
· Possess fundamental knowledge of turbomachinery theory and thorough understanding of standard engineering principles
· Experience with machinery design, production, and/or or servicing
· Education/experience in structured problem solving
· Familiarity and experience with industry standards such as ASME and API
· Interest in a future technical management role
