Job Description

Master Thesis – Forced response validation of STAR CCM+ with full turbine simulation

Join us on our journey into the future #FutureMakers#Siemens

Be part of an open and dynamic workplace where professional and personal development is high on the agenda. By making sustainable energy solutions more cost effective, developing new technologies for the future's smart industry and electrifying passenger and freight transport, we make reality of our vision of a sustainable world.

We are now offering a Master Thesis project at Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB in Finspång, Sweden.

Whole Engine department

We are 14 persons who are responsible for rotor and blade dynamics as well as secondary air systems in our gas turbines (Power output: 15-57 MW). Our main working tasks are development of existing and future engines. We also give support to other departments such as manufacturing, sales, commissioning and service.

The challenge

·  The goal to design engines with higher efficiency leads to a tendency to design lighter and more highly loaded components.
·  Forced response excitation is of particular interest and has to be predicted with accurate and validated tools in order to avoid failures. Forced response simulations are however very costly, especially when full 360 degree models are used.
·  This high cost often leads to model simplification and/or size reduction. Tools like StarCCM+, with their multi row Harmonic Balance (HB) solvers, can be utilized in order to create higher fidelity models with reduced computational cost.

The proposed work is to be performed within 20 weeks and includes preparation of geometry, mesh generation, performing CFD calculations (mainly Star-CCM+ versus Ansys CFX), data post processing and verification of the results as compared to measurement data.

The CFD calculations should include time marching full annulus simulation and single passage HB simulation. If time frame allows a higher fidelity model considering the hub and shroud cavities could be investigated.

Who are you?

·  You are a Master Thesis student within relevant area.
·  Previous experience with CFD programs, aeromechanics, programming skills and/or measurements are an advantage.

Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB offer products and solutions for generating sustainable and resource efficient electricity. Our customers include utilities, independent power producers and companies in the oil and gas industry.
