Siemens Rail Electrification is a dynamic and exciting team based predominately in York who deliver traction power solutions for clients on railway projects in both the UK and Internationally. As an Electrification Apprentice, you will be working on the Design, Construction and Testing of new Railway Electrification systems to provide reliable and flexible power supplies for Rail Systems.
Key activities will include the design, installation and commissioning of high & low voltage electrical systems, including digital protection equipment, remote operation and monitoring systems, HV & LV switchgear. A key part of the training will involve work with our cutting edge power conversion team.
You will become familiar with the project lifecycle from option development to detailed design & build to ensure that the optimum solution has been delivered to meet the contracted requirements.
New technology will include the application of static frequency converters, which are new to UK infrastructure and will possibly provide exciting learning and development opportunities worldwide.
We are recruiting school and college leavers to join our Railway Electrification apprenticeship scheme to make a difference in future Engineering projects
Here is how the programme works:
Whilst on the Apprenticeship you will be following an apprenticeship standard ST0316
Rail Engineering Advanced Technician.
The programme structure and duration will be dependent on the apprenticeship standard you will be following. This will be confirmed when you join us but could include one of the following methods of learning:
- Day release at college
- Block release
- Online learning
In some instances you may be in college full time during your first year.
Whilst working towards a formal qualification you will also work as part of a team on real life projects within the workplace.
Here is what you can make a difference in:

- Commissioning new installations

The candidate:
We are looking for forward-thinking, inquisitive candidates that demonstrate the following characteristics:

Minimum Educational Requirements:
It is preferred that you would be on track to achieve or have achieved both a Level 2 engineering competence (foundation/NVQ) qualification and a Level 3 engineering knowledge (BTEC) qualification.
If you have none of the above qualifications, if you do have A Level Maths and Physics, this would be considered.
