Job Description

Siemens Gas and Power delivers service solutions for gas turbines, steam turbines and generators to increase efficiency, reliability and availability throughout the entire lifecycle of customers' assets. We partner with our customers to achieve optimal performance and success by offering maintenance services, modernizations and upgrades, remote monitoring, lifetime extensions and condition monitoring to logistical and turnkey services for rotating equipment.

About the role:

To ensure that the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 and Regulations with regard to machinery are complied with at Siemens Wadeville facilities.

Specific Responsibilities:

·  Responsible as GMR 2(1) to ensure that the provisions of the Act and Regulations regarding machinery are complied with
·  Implement a preventative maintenance program aimed at ensuring the safety and continued production of all machinery
·  Ensure the documentation for the preventative maintenance program is kept and maintained
·  Investigate machinery related incidents, prepare a written report to management and discuss the causes and possible actions to prevent repetition at the safety meeting
·  Report certain incidents to the Department of Labour as stipulated in Section 24(1)(c) of the act

·Report machinery related safety risk at the safety meeting and provide a proposal as to how the problem should be addressed to ensure that the equipment is in line with the necessary requirements, when and what maintenance should be done on the equipment to ensure optimal performance and to ensure that:

othe installations, machinery and equipment are suitable for the purpose for which it is used;

othe installations, machinery and equipment are installed, operated and maintained (including any safety equipment) in such a manner as to prevent the exposure of persons to hazardous conditions or circumstances;

oall exposed and dangerous parts of the installations, machinery and equipment are effectively safeguarded;

othe installations, machinery and equipment are only operated by persons who has been authorized and who are fully aware of the dangers attached thereto and is conversant with the precautionary measures to be taken or observed to obviate such dangers;

oeffective precautionary measures are developed and implemented to protect persons whilst performing maintenance, cleaning or adjustment work;

oany piece of equipment which threatens the safety of any person be stopped.

·  Ensure that a Lock Out system is in place in order to ensure that all work on plant and equipment is carried out under a permit to work and authorize specific persons responsible for the supervision of work on machinery.
·  Ensure compliance with Section 10 of the Act; General Duties of Manufacturers and others regarding articles and substances for use at work (Design, manufacture, import, sell, or supplies) and Section 22 Sale of Certain Articles
·  Perform plant inspections in order to ensure compliance with the Act and Regulations
·  The area of responsibility includes all the installations, plant, machinery, high voltage electrical installations and low voltage electrical installations on the premises.It includes the reticulation network as well as the building installations, but it excludes electronic installations
·  Commission Legal Compliance audits on a 2 yearly interval, and coordinate action plans with Line Departments
·  Ensure Written Safe work procedures and risk assessments are in place for all work performed in relation to plant and machinery
·  Ensure a system is in place that allows only authorized persons to use machinery.Persons authorized must be trained, qualified and certified to operate the specific machinery and equipment
·  Ensure GMR 2(7)(a) appointees undergo training on theOccupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 and Regulations
·  Direct and Control GMR 2(7)(a) appointees in relation to the Supervision of machinery
·  Report back to the Section 16(1) and Section 16(2) appointees.

What do I need to qualify?

·  Engineering diploma in either mechanical or electrical (heavy current) field with an academic qualification of at least T3 or N5, or of an equivalent
·  Must at least have 10 years practical experience in the operation and maintenance appropriate to the class of machinery required to be supervised
·  5 – 10 years relevant experience in installations with a sum of power generated by machinery on the premises in question and the power derived from other sources, including the generation of steam for process purposes, exceeding 1,200kW, but less than 3,000kW.
·  Master Electrician qualification would be an advantage
