Customer Support Intern: Strategic Student Program

  • Internship
  • UK

Job description

We are Siemens

Siemens Digital Industries Software is a leading provider of solutions for the design, simulation and manufacture of products across many different industries. Formula 1 cars, skyscrapers, ships, space exploration vehicles, and many of the objects we see in our daily lives are being conceived and manufactured using our Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software.

We're looking for a student intern to join our collaborative and innovative Customer Support team here at Parasolid for 1-year internship starting Summer 2024.

If you are passionate about problem-solving, have a solid grasp of geometry and can visualize shapes in 3D, if you want to work directly with customers to resolve problems, then we’d love to hear from you!

Parasolid is a 3D modelling toolkit used in the world’s leading CAD, Engineering and Manufacturing applications. Parasolid has been at the cutting edge of 3D design for over 30 years, with a wide range of technology leaders and household names, such as Apple, SpaceX, Red Bull F1, Lego, Canon, and Dyson, designing their products on systems powered by Parasolid. With over 5 million engineers and designers using Parasolid-based applications daily, you are rarely more than a meter away from a product designed with Parasolid geometry.

What we’re looking for

While this role requires many of the same skills as a software development role, it’s not about writing code 9 to 5. This is rare opportunity to work in a friendly team supporting customers worldwide. You will provide technical support and advice to help our customers build some of the most exciting applications in the world. You will replicate problems reported by customers, help them debug tricky geometry issues, and create tests to help ensure our bug fixes stay fixed. You will have the opportunity to contribute to the way the team works together and, depending on experience, may be asked to work on the tools we use day to day.

In order to make the most of our collaborative working environment, you will be expected to spend much of your work time at our Cambridge office, in order to benefit from the experience of other Parasolid staff working there.

What you’ll be doing

This is a Customer Support internship, focused on supporting software developers who create CAD, Engineering and Manufacturing applications by using Siemens component software toolkits. The internship provides opportunities to work in a supportive team environment to develop and apply high-quality customer-facing skills, as well as significant technical competence. The emphasis is on achievable customer-support and test-writing tasks to encourage your development and deliver top-quality support to Siemens customers and thorough testing for Siemens products.

Activities will include learning about the Parasolid 3D modelling toolkit and then using that knowledge, along with strong customer focus and a keen interest in problem solving, geometry and scripting, to:

  • replicate problems that the customer is experiencing,
  • provide detailed technical advice, and
  • generate appropriate tests for Siemens software developers to use in further investigations

The tests run in a LISP-based environment: full training will be given, to develop competence in generating effective scripted tests.

The internship will last for 12 months from summer 2024 to summer 2025.

The team makes a wide variety of contributions to Siemens business, producing in-depth technical reference material, business processes, presentations and documentation, sample applications in C, C++ and C#, and installers. There may be opportunities to learn and contribute in several of these areas.

What you’ll bring

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Maths, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or Civil Engineering
  • Keen to work with customers and develop strong customer-facing skills
  • Desire to collaborate in a friendly team environment
  • Enjoy creative problem-solving and possess a passion for geometry
  • Clear visual and logical thinker with excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge and experience of LISP, Python, PERL or other scripting languages is relevant but not essential
  • Knowledge and experience of C, C++ or C# is relevant but not essential
