Merchandising Controller

A management position working with the Director of Buying within a Department, or multiple departments, supervising the merchandising team. To provide the Buying teams with support and direction on strategic, commercial and analytical decision making
Reports to:         Director of Buying

Strategic Role
· With guidance from the Director of Buying, responsible for ensuring adherence to all aspects of planning, budgeting and merchandising processes, ensuring company harmonisation
· Develop and implement a strategy that delivers all fiscal targets and drives the business through a significant period of growth
· To provide strategic and operational leadership to the merchandising team
· Oversee the detailed and regular analysis of sales data in order to improve forward planning and forecasting processes, ensuring the appropriate quantitative and qualitative data is deployed effectively in decision making
· Define where risk and opportunities exist and implement tactical repositioning
· Agree all financial macro targets with the Director of Buying  
Sales and Stock - Performance Reporting
· Responsible for the departmental delivery of the sales, markdown, stock turn and contribution budgets
· To conduct regular trading reviews with the Merchandiser and Buying teams to maximise sales and manage stock levels
· To review the WSSI's regularly with the Merchandiser ensuring appropriate action has been taken
· Establish and review appropriate stock plans by product type allowing for minimum stocks, seasonality and trading period
· Direct the Merchandiser in the management of intake scheduling, deliveries and open-to-buy including taking account of lead times and to ensure the department is working within the parameters of the agreed stock plans by section
· Ensure departmental control of terminal stocks by projecting end of season breaking stocks and potential mark down requirement
· Agree with the Merchandiser the reclassification of carry forward styles and control stocks accordingly
· Direct the Merchandiser to ensure future stock holding and warehouse capacity requirements are clearly communicated to Supply Chain and establish a good fit of optimum stock levels, flow rates, freight costs and storage capacity.
· Agree with the Merchandiser pack size and structure and manage changes
· Agree intake and cut off weeks for stock in season
· To ensure all aspects of strategic planning within IP are met (WSSI, LP's, Option Planning and Assortment Manager)  
Analysis – Problem solving and maintaining accurate paper work
· Accountable for the investigation and resolution of any data inaccuracies
· Ensure the accuracy of all reports produced - including strategy, sign off and store range presentations
· Direct the Merchandising team on identified stock overages and shortages
· Ensure all company submits are completed accurately and on time  
Range – Develop and manage range content
· To direct the Merchandiser in the development of departmental option plans
· Ensure the option plans fit within the agreed space constraints while delivering  appropriate product width and choice throughout the grades
· To influence, drive, and lead the range building process through regular range review meetings with the buying team both post and in season
· To agree store gradings with Retail Management
· Accountable for the checking, updating and maintaining store and style grading
· Responsible for the selection of styles in the Automatic Replenishment system upon agreement with Retail  
Systems and Development
· Responsible alongside the Director of Buying for the successful implementation of IP Planning & Forecasting
· To improve and implement new systems and operating procedures in line with business change
· To assist in driving through change ensuring business harmonisation  
People – Recruiting, leading and motivating team to achieve company standards
· To provide strategic and operational leadership to the merchandising team
· Ensure delivery of best practice and adherence to company policy
· To maintain regular communication with peer group to ensure a consistent way of working
· To ensure regular communication within the relevant Buying teams
· Optimise team morale though effective communication and promote a  positive work environment
· To direct workflow accordingly
· Ensure standards of performance are achieved across the Merchandising team in the department
· Monitor development and achievement of goals for the team by providing coaching and feedback via the PDR  process to improve work performance
· To train and develop the departmental merchandising team.
· To take responsibility for own development
· Ensure that all disciplinary action is taken in accordance with company procedure
