We are currently seeking an experienced professional to join our team in the role of Senior Software Engineering Manager.

Principal responsibilities

·  You will lead a regional team that builds & supports a shared container hosting platform on AWS based on Kubernetes/Istio/Docker technologies and Kong for API management. This team is part of a globally distributed function that includes members from Hong Kong, the UK, Mexico, India, and China.
·  Overseeing and directing the design, creation, and maintenance of code and tooling that are highly maintainable and scale to the required operational and business requirements.
·  Overseeing and directing activities within the Site Reliability Engineering team to ensure reliability and maintainability of large-scale platforms.
·  Drive adoption and evolution of monitoring solutions (Splunk, Datadog, AppDynamics and bespoke tooling) to create best-of-breed production monitoring, capacity management, and incident detection and response solutions.
·  Proactively ensuring our systems and processes can tolerate the inevitable underlying disruptions that can happen when working at global scale and are designed to be resilient and recoverable. This will include promoting practices such as chaos engineering and games days.
·  Quantifying failure and availability in a prescriptive manner using SLOs and SLIs.
·  You will be the focal point between many distinct functions and stakeholders to ensure platform engineers, architects, delivery, and release managers, SRE and platform tenants work collectively to deliver excellent levels of service and a smooth, interruption free experience to the millions of HSBC’s global customer base.
·  You will be a key contact and escalation point for major changes and incidents.
·  Co-ordination of follow-the-sun on call rotas to ensure adequate out of hours cover for the mission critical platforms and its tenants.
·  Liaison with key vendors and partners to ensure they are held to account for their own service delivery.
·  Liaison with HSBC service and problem management stakeholders to ensure all key technology controls (e.g. patching, disaster recovery) are maintained in good order and that systems are compliant with technology standards.

Requirements

·  Fluency in written and spoken English and be comfortable working in a multi-cultured/global environment.
·  Production experience with large scale Kubernetes & API Gateway technologies.
·  Familiarity with Istio / Envoy or other variations of service mesh.
·  Fundamentals-based problem-solving skills; Drive decision by function, first principles-based mind-set. We are not “title” driven and we value results over process.
·  Demonstrate bias-to-action and avoid analysis-paralysis; Drive action to the finish line with high quality and on time
·  You are ego-less when searching for the best ideas; You contribute effectively outside of your specialty; You think about solving problems from the standpoint of best outcome for the team
·  Values autonomy and results over process.
·  Proven ability to keep a cool head during major incidents, co-ordinate recovery activity and update stakeholders with key information in timely fashion.
·  Systematic problem-solving approach, coupled with excellent communication skills and a sense of ownership and drive.
·  Strong fundamentals in distributed systems and networking.
·  Proven experience in diagnosing and resolving production issues in complex environments.
·  Familiarity with the concepts of quantifying failure and availability in a prescriptive manner using SLOs and SLIs.
·  Experience programming in at least one of the following languages: Python, Go, Ruby, Bash scripting.
·  Experience using Ansible for automating infrastructure provisioning, configuration, and deployment.
·  Experience in performance analysis & tuning, GameDays and Chaos Engineering is a big plus.
·  Experience working within the constraints of a highly regulated environment, such as financial services.
