Job description

Summer Associate - Intellectual Property Intern

Job Description:

At HPE, we bring together the brightest minds to create breakthrough technology solutions and advance the way people live and work. Our legacy inspires us as we forge ahead dedicated to helping our customers make their mark on the world.

Learning does not only happen through training. Relationships are among the most powerful ways for people to learn and grow, and this is part of our HPE culture. In addition to working alongside talented colleagues, you will have many opportunities to learn through coaching and stretch assignment opportunities. You’ll be guided by feedback and support to accelerate your learning and maximize your knowledge. We also have a “reverse mentoring” program which allows us to share our knowledge and strengths across our multi-generation workforce.

Job Description:

Since 2010, Hewlett-Packard Co. and now HPE have hired attorneys directly out of law school. In 2014, HP started its 2L Summer Program.  HPE continues this Program by recruiting summer interns into one of three practice groups - Intellectual Property, Litigation and Corporate (Securities and M&A). HPE’s summer interns work on a diverse range of matters with other Legal members, many of whom are performing substantive legal work at a much faster rate than their peers in law firms.  Summer interns will also have the opportunity to participate in a number of pro bono activities and other Legal and HPE-wide events across the country.

Recruiting top talent through the Summer Program is a critical component of HPE’s game changing approach. As such, the Summer Program is designed to feed into full-time attorney positions, and summer interns are paid at a market-competitive rate. The Summer Program lasts 10 weeks and includes travel to HPE’s San Jose headquarters.

Education:

·  Pursing College degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Physics.
·  IP candidates not having one of these degrees must be exceptionally strong in other areas (here we consider applicants with degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, and Materials Science).

Experience:

·  Demonstrated patent law interest - HPE requires IP candidates to have a demonstrated interest in patent law. This requirement is typically satisfied with patent-law-related summer associate or law clerk experience, passage of the USPTO agent exam, significant patent law academic work, or a combination of these.  Patent Examiner experience is highly valued.
·  Intellectual property law principles - A working knowledge of intellectual property law principles is required of all IP candidates.
·  Patent application drafting experience - HPE sees patent application drafting experience positively, but does not require this experience in our IP candidates. We do, however, see it as a plus for otherwise well-qualified IP candidates.

We offer:

• A competitive salary and extensive social benefits

• Diverse and dynamic work environment

• Work-life balance and support for career development

• An amazing life inside the element! Want to know more about it?
