POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Packaging Machine Operator sets up, adjusts and operates automated packaging equipment including but not limited to: Pac Macs, Video Jet Case Coders, Markem Printers, Ishida Scales, Vertical Form Fill, Top Sealers, Adept Robotics and Sonic Welders. This individual is responsible for monitoring the production line and ensuring equipment is consistently running successfully and team members are working efficiently on the lines. This position reports directly to the Shift Production Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

·  Performs pre-shift equipment checks to ensure proper functioning.
·  Sets up and adjusts machines to run a variety of tube sizes and types according to production schedule.
·  Maintaines all packaging – related documentation
·  Logs all down time in the PMO monitoring form, logs rework, tracking effeciencies & waste
·  Stops, locks out/tags out or reset machines when malfunctions occur, clear machine jams, and reports malfunctions to supervisor or manager. Notifies Packaging Technicians in a timely fashion if/when unable to rectify problem independently and follows the communication protocol.
·  Performs quality checks ensuring finished units are marked with the correct date code, box code, UPC number/product code, target weight, ingredient mix, and label; stops line and notifies Quality Assurance and Production Management in the event of a non-conformance.
·  To include performing metal detection checks
·  Communicates with other production staff members to ensure efficient production, appropriate output levels and to minimize set-up times.
·  Monitors production line for malfunctions and adjusts machinery in accordance with policy and safety procedures to correct problems.
·  Provides direction to line staff on task execution based on production flow.
·  Monitors work performed by line staff for compliance with production efficiency targets, Good Manufacturing Practices and Safety protocols.
·  Identifies manpower constraints within the work flow process.
·  Ensures lower level operators and crew members adhere to meal and break periods as applicable
·  Must be able to set up all programs on all packaging machines
·  Understands and can operate all packaging machines in the plant
·  Achieve 100% start up of packing machines
·  Assist on-line training of Machine Operators and other line employees as required
·  Accountable for the accuracy and completeness of shift reports.
·  Participates in all required training sessions
·  Cooperates with supervisors and managers and ensures compliance with all Company policies, Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP), Hazard Communication, and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) as outlined in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 21 - Section 110.

Additional Requirements:

·  Performs preventative maintenance checks throughout shift and advises Production Supervisor or Manager of equipment malfunctions.
·  Available to work a flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, and overtime as business needs.
·  Available to work holidays upon request due to business needs
·  Trains lower-level operators on equipment and process.
·  Participates in all required training sessions.
·  Willingness and ability to lead and offer directions/guidance. Reliable, responsible, dependable and fulfilling of obligations.
·  Proactively assist team members, managers and employees as needed.
·  Manage special projects and perform other duties as assigned.

·  Able to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) (ear plugs, hard hats, coveralls, smocks, gloves, goggles, and other GMP required equipment; hair net, beard net).
·  Qualified candidates must demonstrate the ability to lift and walk with a load weighing up to 65 pounds for short distances.

Preferred Candidate Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

·  High school diploma or General Education Degree preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

·  A minimum of 1 year of related experience in VFFS packaging environment as packaging machine operator Earthbound Farm level B or equivalent work experience. Must complete PMO proficiency test with a score of 90% or better.
·  Basic arithmetic skills including the ability to count, add, subtract, multiply and perform basic division.
·  Strong knowledge of food packaging equipment including scales, baggers, bag sealers, case coders and the manufacturing process.
·  Trained in electrical safety, Lock out Tag Out safety, proper lifting, proper usage of a ladder, Hazmat and Hazcom.

NON ESSENTIAL:

·  Ability to speak, write and read in the English language (i.e. digital displays and written documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals); Bilingual/Bi-literate English and Spanish skills preferred.
