Master Thesis - Motion Controls
Göteborg, SWEDEN
Job description
Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future? If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.
Background
V.A.S. is to automate multiple different vehicles and machines within the Volvo Group product portfolio. It is developing configurable software platforms for vehicle and machine controls interfaces and control applications. Vehicles and machines (the yellow Volvo’s) have different type of actuators for motion control and ideally the automated driving system is agnostic to this.
Volvo and Volvo’s partners have different automated driving systems, ADS. The automation interface between ADS and vehicle motion control, VMC, have many different flavours and signal set ups dependent on the actual vehicle or machine used in combination with the ADS supplier.
International standardisation is in the works, but many open questions are still to be answered. The highly non-linear steer responses of vehicles, especially due to significantly different loading conditions, as function of speed over ground is a challenge. The project aims to find a robust and generic set of interfacing signals to control the vehicle motion as function of ADS intentions.
Machines without a steering wheel are deployed but may at the same time have all wheel steer making classic theory on understeer and steering gains is a challenge. Model proposals are present but require thorough analyses through simulation.
Aim
The aim of the project is to find a generic set of robust motion control signals that would fit different types of ground vehicles in Volvo’s product portfolio.
Tasks
·
Literature study
·
Design observers and controllers for vehicle motion control
·
Make existing vehicle- and machine simulation models fit for the analyses
Student Profile
Students shall aim for a master’s in systems and controls, mechatronics, engineering physics (with controls) or vehicle engineering (with controls). Proof of sound understanding of mathematics and physics is required.
