Master thesis: Listen more and talk less - adding ears to heavy duty trucks
Göteborg, SWEDEN IT development
Job description
Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future? If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.
During the last few decades, the automotive industry has been focusing on adding convenience- and safety features to vehicles by enhancing Vehicle Vision. Cameras, Lidars, Radars and Ultrasonic sensors have been put on the vehicles, outside and inside, helping the driver to focus, avoid obstacles and the vehicle’s semi-autonomous systems to function. Data from the vision sensors is used for machine-learning purposes in huge data centers. Many systems in the vehicle such as steering, braking and suspension are relying on the vision sensors for their function.
Although Vehicle Vision has been developed, integrated, and perfected for many years, the same cannot be said regarding Vehicle Auditory Perception (hearing). As humans, we rely on Auditory Perception in many situations when vision is impaired or impossible. For us, Auditory Perception and Vision are completely fused by our brains, for us to understand the world around us and help us safely navigate through it.
We now want to explore the possibilities of adding Vehicle Auditory Perception to our heavy truck products – what new applications could be envisioned? Can Vehicle Auditory Perception data be fused with Vision data to create a more robust data set? Can Vehicle Auditory Perception be used to determine weather conditions, road quality, security risks, vehicle damage or can any other new or improved customer values be found? That is the challenge of this thesis!
