Master thesis: Composite battery pack enclosure

  • Eskilstuna, SWEDEN
  • Design / Civil engineering / Industrial engineering

Job description

Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future? If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

Background

This thesis is ideal for a mechanical engineering, computational mechanics, or material science student interested in designing next-gen construction equipment at Volvo CE, Eskilstuna, Sweden, starting in February 2025.

In electric machines, NVH sources include the electric motor, power inverter, transmission, and pumps. Addressing NVH requires reducing these sources through material selection, design optimization, isolation, damping, and control strategies. Composite materials, known for their damping properties and lightweight nature, are emerging in electric vehicle applications, particularly for battery enclosures. These composite battery enclosures, integrated into vehicle structures, offer superior crash safety, thermal management, and weight reduction, improving efficiency and range.

The thesis focuses on developing CAE simulation models and calculations to tackle issues like thermal management, NVH, strength, and weight reduction. Most work will take place at the Division of Powertrain, Technical Center in Eskilstuna.

Project summary

This thesis aims to develop CAE simulation models and conduct analyses to address challenges related to thermal management, NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness), structural strength, and weight reduction.

· Initially, study/collect and pre-process the related knowledge on adressing the above mentioned issues in the Powertrain & Electromobility organization

· Understand the importance of scope of the thesis work and accordingly develop CAE simulation models and conduct the relevant analysis

· Analyze and compare results that are predicted by different methods

· Recommend a potential solution if any

· Publish the outcome in an international journal if applicable

Suitable background

The ideal student possess good communications skills in English (written and verbal), show a high level of initiative, is self-driven, have good analytical capabilities and have a high interest in computer-aided engineering (CAE) solutions for developing next generation construction equipment machines. The successful candidate should have strong computer programming skills and should be willing to work at the Division of Powertrain & Electromobility organization of VOLVO CE at the Technical Center in Eskilstuna.
