Job description

Transport is at the core of modern society. Imagine using your expertise to shape sustainable transport and infrastructure solutions for the future? If you seek to make a difference on a global scale, working with next-gen technologies and the sharpest collaborative teams, then we could be a perfect match.

Long Description

Future heavy-duty transportation needs to be energy efficient and minimize the use of fossil fuels. Electrified powertrains have high propulsion efficiency but can also recuperate some of the energy during braking (regenerative braking). However, traditional brakes are also needed, and the optimal use of regenerative and traditional braking is a non-trivial task. The traditional braking system also emit wear particles which can cause severe effects on human health. In fact, the wear emissions (from both brakes, tyres and road) are the dominant source from transportation since 2013 (considering PM2.5). Legislation for wear particles will come in place with Euro 7. In order to design brake systems and components to meet these challenges, good models for temperatures of the system are essential. Availability of data from the brake system as well as test results from brake testing will support this work. The long-term objective for this project is to support electrification as well as reduce health impact from particle emissions.

Project description

In collaboration with Volvo trucks, many different data sets from testing in brake dynamometer rigs as well as vehicles will be analyzed. Basically, acting as a digital temperature sensor, an AI model will be created and trained on this set of data. Further, an FE model of the brake disc will be created and parameters for heat input, cooling and heat flux will be calibrated using the same sets of data. These types of analyses are important when developing future solutions of brake systems for heavy-duty vehicles supporting electrification as well as reducing brake emissions as mandated by Euro 7.

About you

We seek 1-2 students looking for a Master’s thesis work with interest in FE simulations and AI and with an interest in supporting reduced impact from emissions. You should be skilled in Matlab/Python, FE analysis, AI and You should also have skills and interest in mechanical systems.
