Job Description

Summary/Objective:

Oversees the daily operation of analytical and microbiology laboratories responsible for internal quality control testing and customer release of food ingredients, agricultural products and pharmaceutical excipients. Supervises laboratory personnel, conducts performance evaluations, approves timesheets and coordinates shift work and on-call schedules. Maintains awareness of current FDA and USP regulations and guidelines, facilitates laboratory and quality improvements by implementation of advanced technological and diagnostic tools, and promotes good laboratory and safety practices.  Laboratory responsibilities include the execution of microbiological assays and techniques for monitoring bacterial count, pathogens, and yeast/mold in manufactured foodstuffs, performing onsite inspections and participating in internal, customer and third-party audits. This position administers a metrology program for auditing analytical equipment calibrations and inventory, creates and administers training regimens for lab staff, implements changes in reference methods (BAM, USP, ISO), validates new SOPs and procedures and completes out-of-spec investigations and reports.

Responsibilities:

·  Supervises laboratory technicians in a Quality Control laboratory and carries out administrative tasks, including hiring, training, scheduling and performance evaluations.
·  Utilizes microbiological techniques such as Petrifilm elucidation, ELISA assays, pathogen identification by API and Rapidec, pour plating, cell staining and microscopy to verify quality compliance of food and pharmaceutical ingredients.
·  Administers the orientation and training of new lab employees and performs annual competency verifications of existing lab staff.  Improves team capabilities, lab reliability and employee skills by providing annual training and career development opportunities.
·  Creates and critiques QA/QC documents, procedures and SOPs.  Reviews and updates laboratory and quality documents as required.
·  Collaborates and consults with manufacturing teams to optimize and implement cleaning practices, hygiene monitoring and good manufacturing practices.
·  Interprets, understands and implements regulatory standards established by FDA, USP, FCC and ISO guidelines.  

Requirements:

·  Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry, biology or microbiology. Masters degree preferred.
·  Supervisory experience in a Quality or Industrial laboratory setting  (3+ years).
·  Extensive experience with pour plating and Petri film microbiological assays (3+ years).
·  Knowledge of Quality Control principles including method validation, document control, instrument calibration and laboratory and chemical safety practices.
·  Preparation of selective and differential medias including tryptic soy broth, trypticase soy agar, Sabouraud’s agar, MacConkey agar, mannitol salt agar and VRBA.
·  Enumeration of microorganisms by direct microscopic examination, simple and gram staining and hemocytometer counting techniques.
·  Subculturing and identification of pathogenic bacteria using API, Rapidec, RapID Staph Plus.
·  Interpreting and implementing USP, BAM and FDA procedures, regulations and guidelines for microbiological and food safety testing.
·  Proficient at operating autoclave equipment, Karl Fisher analyzers, UV-VIS spectrophotometers, HPLC systems and pH meters.
·  Perform ELISA immunoassays using Neogen or Vicam analytical instrumentation.
