The Associate Director of Alliance Management will support R&D alliances with multiple Genentech partners and collaborators. The person in this position will be responsible for leading the strategic discussions and decision making processes to effectively manage each alliance. The role also requires anticipating and addressing contract and business issues with our alliance partners. The Assoc. Director of Alliance Management will coordinate cross functional activities with internal work groups in Legal, Business Development, Project Portfolio Planning, and Finance.
Responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to the following:
1. Manages the ongoing business relationship with assigned R&D alliance partners:
· Provides a single point-of-contact for partners and a pathway for business/contractual issue resolution or other business-related matters
· Works with project teams, Genentech stakeholders, and alliance partners to evaluate and resolve any business/contractual issues in an equitable and timely manner, helping to ensure the overall value and success of each project and that the spirit of each collaboration agreement is kept intact
· Participates in periodic joint governance and/or team meetings to stay abreast of collaboration progress and tracking to contractual obligations
· Proactively tracks, monitors, and communicates contract milestones, obligations, and any financial payments to Genentech stakeholders. Works with project team leaders to ensure that both Genentech and its alliance partners, are on track to meet contractual obligations and milestones
· Proactively monitors the economic value of each assigned collaboration
· Reviews and approves material financial payments and routes payment requests through Finance
· Works with Legal and other internal stakeholders, as well as alliance partners, to review and execute contract renewals and amendments
· Reviews existing collaboration agreements and lead efforts to clarify/amend these where necessary in order to maximize their overall value to Genentech
· Proactively obtains collaborator feedback on the general state of progress and effectiveness of the collaboration; helps to identify, facilitate, and generally steward changes, where necessary and appropriate, to maintain highly effective collaborations 2. Contributes to developing new business relationships with potential alliance partners:
· Understands Genentech's strategies, objectives and goals; as these potentially relate to collaborations
· Stays abreast of internal and external developments, trends and dynamics. Continually evaluates current and future opportunities within current alliances/collaborators. Recommends new, enhanced or revised opportunities as appropriate
· Works with Business Development, Research, Clinical Development and others to establish effective governance structures, strategies and processes to maximize the potential value and operational success of pending collaborations
· Proactively conveys best practices and other learnings about potential partners - their strengths and capabilities - as well as appropriate partnership terms and agreement structures
· Sets specific and measurable performance objectives, standards, and accountabilities for each assigned collaboration
· Enters all key contract information into departmental systems and databases for proactive and efficient tracking of Genentech and collaborator obligations
· Develops strong working relationships with key involved parties for each project, internally and externally. Strives to proactively anticipate and address business-related needs of the parties to optimize joint project team success
· Works with project team leaders and project management preparing for collaboration launch; initial joint project team meetings
· Educates team members on contract terms, obligations, milestones and roles and responsibilities

· Bachelors Degree (business, legal, finance or life sciences discipline); MBA or PhD in life sciences is a plus.
· Sr. Manager level candidates should have 12 years' relevant pharmaceutical/biotech industry experience with at least 3 years' work experience in legal, finance, contract development & administration, business development, licensing, strategic planning, research, development, commercial, or manufacturing; multi-disciplinary experience is strongly preferred. Candidates with advanced degrees will be considered with 7+ years of directly related experience.
· Written and oral fluency in Mandarin is strongly preferred.
· Must demonstrate outstanding knowledge of the overall drug development process relevant to pharmaceutical/biotech organizations.
· Proven proficiencies with a wide range of data/information: scientific/clinical, legal/regulatory, business, financial and market analytics.
· Expert, proven abilities to translate complex contract terms and conditions into strategic and operational elements for both internal and external parties.
· Consistently meets or exceeds professional/work-related objectives, goals and targets.
· Proven ability to operate independently, with little to no day-to-day direct supervision of work. Experience leading departmental planning processes, including development and implementation of such plans, goals, and metrics.
· Strong interpersonal skills. Capacity to work cross-functionally and to influence people without direct authority.
· Ability to travel up to 25% of the time, including internationally if required. First hand knowledge of biotech/pharma industry in Asia (especially China) is highly desired.
