The Position

The Immunology, Infectious diseases and Ophthalmology (I2O) Disease Therapeutic Area (DTA) of Roche Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development (pRED) strives to discover and develop new drugs for autoimmune, inflammatory, infectious, and eye diseases with unmet medical need.

The I2O Systems Biology group, located in Basel, is an integral component of the I2O drug discovery and early development pipeline, supporting data generation and knowledge management across the DTA, deepening disease understanding and proposing new drug targets and biomarkers based on systematic, unbiased, data-driven approaches.

In this role, you will assimilate into a team of systems biologists, responding and adapting to results-oriented project goals in an agile manner. The capacity to form close collaborative relationships with biologists and clinicians within the I2O DTA, and technical teams in other functions, is essential. In return, the work environment will be highly dynamic and rewarding.

Projects will include, but will not be limited to, one or more of the following activities:

·  deepening disease understanding in areas of unmet medical need;
·  delivering innovative and sustainable sources of targets for entry into portfolio;
·  facilitating the development of biomarkers for early drug development;
·  ensuring the reverse translation of clinical studies into target discovery;

In addition, you have the following qualifications and experience:

·  You hold a Ph.D. or an M.D. in a biomedical (e.g. Immunology, Microbiology, Ophthalmology, Medicine, Veterinary Sciences), computational (e.g. Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics) or interdisciplinary field (e.g. Systems Biology, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Engineering, Biostatistics)
·  You have 3-5 years' postdoctoral research experience in academia or industry, with a strong record of publication and/or patents;
·  You have experience identifying targets and biomarkers using unbiased, data-driven approaches;
·  You have a deep expertise in data science, exemplified by one or more of the following:
·  You have experience working with and integrating multiple different types of orthogonal datasets;
·  You have experience utilizing and developing algorithms for mining complex biomedical data, including statistics and machine learning;
·  You are familiar with data & knowledge management practices and have a good understanding of knowledge graphs;
·  You are able to translate biomedical questions into actionable analytical plans (algorithms, software etc.) and communicating them to technical experts;
·  You are able to translate complex, heterogeneous data into biologically interpretable models of disease and communicating them effectively to biologists and clinicians;
·  You have strong scripting and programming skills, preferably in R and/or Python;
·  You are comfortable managing and interacting with multiple stakeholders within and outside the department and contributing to several projects in parallel;
·  You are enthusiastic about learning new concepts and technologies and you easily show engagement with your peers and supervisors;
·  You are fluent in English.
