We are offering a unique opportunity to join our team in the Roche Innovation Center Basel.
The Lead Discovery (LD) department in Pharma Research and Early Development initiates and supports Small Molecule research projects by identifying chemical starting points and by providing key data and insights for their successful optimization in Medicinal Chemistry. We are a tightly knit community of many and diverse talents, closely collaborating with our therapeutic areas and other functions.
We are seeking a committed and seasoned scientist for the Protein Sciences Group which comprises protein science, membrane proteins and expression & fermentation & working close together with the structural biology team especially for Cryo-EM.
As Scientist in Protein Science, you
· Are accountable for protein science projects throughout the entire process from gene to assay and from gene to structure: Design of constructs, cloning, purification, protein characterization, assay development and biostructure activities in close collaboration with the structural biology team
· Help establishing and expanding Cryo-electron microscopy expertise at pRED. Implementation of best practices, design of experiments and interaction with external partners for high resolution structure determination
· Establish assays in close collaboration with assay developers, screeners and biophysicists
· Coordinate lead discovery activities for selected projects
· Evaluate and establish novel technologies and methods with the aim to improve efficiency and effectiveness of protein production.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for a professional with a PhD in biology, biochemistry or a related life sciences field with at least 3 years of experience in protein production and structural biology within the pharma or biotech sector. In addition you bring:
· Expertise in applying all state-of-the-art expression systems, a wide spectrum of chromatography and protein-based experimental methods including enzymology and assay development
· Externally recognized expertise through oral presentations and high impact publications
· Expertise in X-ray crystallography and cryo-electron microscopy
· Experience with automation and parallelization of processes, building new platforms, evaluating new methods
· Project leadership experience and experience in outsourcing projects to external partners are a plus.
