We are offering a unique opportunity to join our team in the Roche Innovation Center Basel.
The Medicinal Chemistry Team in Pharma Research and Early Development, located in Basel, is part of Small Molecule Research. We are a community of drug-hunters comprising of expertise in synthesis, design and purification, with a responsibility to convert hypotheses into innovative small molecules for treating diseases of high unmet medical need, closely collaborating with our broader therapeutic areas and functions.
As a Principal Scientist and Scientific Contributor in Medicinal Chemistry, you will be accountable for driving medicinal chemistry projects as part of a creative team. Your responsibilities include the implementation of appropriate medicinal chemistry strategies to answer key hypotheses to advance the project and drive design of novel molecules, culminating in the identification of clinical candidates. You will have excellent business acumen, interpersonal skills, creativity, curiosity to learn and scientific leadership, conducive to driving strong scientific excellence at project level.
In this role:
· You contribute to medicinal chemistry projects, utilizing medicinal chemistry knowledge to optimize physicochemical properties and develop structure-activity relationships for potency, ADME, pharmacokinetics and safety. You generate novel, testable hypotheses and effectively use state of the art methods to drive target design. You apply your synthesis expertise both intellectually and practically to realize target compounds that enable clear decision making. You play a key role in defining scientific strategies and goals within a project team setting
· You work in a cross-functional matrix leadership, building strong relationships with peers within project teams to support advancement of compounds to identify clinical candidates. You are able to work on projects in a dynamic manner and you act collaboratively and decisively
· You participate in project reviews at various governance meetings, lead the preparation and presentation of dossiers for clinical candidate nomination and compound advancement. You support the generation of publications and patents and present medicinal chemistry research at scientific conferences
· You may work on target assessments, providing technical expertise to identify new small molecule projects to enter the portfolio. You may assume leadership roles in due diligences representing Medicinal Chemistry
· You may have indirect management responsibilities when leading projects or teams as a project leader

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for a medicinal chemist, PhD with 8+ years in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry. You bring:
· Track record of delivering high impact contributions to Medicinal Chemistry projects and proven project leadership skills
· Expert working knowledge of the key Medicinal Chemistry concepts and design tools required for pharmaceutical drug discovery
· Consistent record of peer-reviewed publications/patents on the topics of medicinal chemistry/ drug discovery
· Demonstrated learning agility embodying flexible ways of working, building a highly collaborative and interdependent team environment to progress the project forward with urgency
· Excellent communication skills for presenting program strategy, issues, mitigation plans and milestones to governance committees and senior leadership
· Strong problem-solving skills for developing creative, innovative solutions, and meeting project objectives
· Demonstrated influence, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills, including the ability to succeed within a matrix environment
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with good level of fluency in English
