Job description

The Position

We are seeking an exceptional and highly motivated researcher for a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Ophthalmology (CMI2O, Basel). We wish to recruit an independent and highly collaborative researcher with a background in stem cell biology, cell biology, and various -omics data analysis to develop new models of neurodegeneration for age-related neurodegenerative diseases of the eye, including AMD and Glaucoma.
 
In this position, the postdoctoral scientist will be responsible for 1) the optimization of human derived retinal organoid protocols to enhance maturation of retinal cells. 2) Develop new models of neurodegeneration in different in vitro systems. 3) Identify molecular pathways that affect neuronal survival in the newly developed model systems.

The RPF Programme has the ambition to build and maintain the Scientific Leadership of the future and to provide leading Roche scientists with the opportunity to collaborate with talented postdoctoral researchers, and leading academic research groups, from around the world. One of the key aims is to advance basic science and technologies that will be published in top-rated, peer-reviewed scientific journals, if necessary preceded by priority patent applications.
The duration of the RPF project is initially set for two years, with the possibility of extension for a third year.
 
Requirements:

  • A Ph.D. in neuroscience, molecular biology, ophthalmology or related field

  • Strong background in human derived organoid development or/and single-cell transcriptomics and data analysis (bioinformatics) is highly desired

  • Productive doctoral training is expected and should be reflected through a record of high-impact publications.

  • Independent, highly motivated, and highly collaborative with the ability to fully utilize the internal resources at the Ophthalmology department and the IHB (Institute of Human Biology, Roche) as well as collaborating with the Neuroscience department and other groups within pRED.

  • Enthusiastic about working in a scientific environment, especially one that is related to drug discovery and development

  • You have very good interpersonal and communication skills, are able to build good working relationships, and are an outstanding teammate. Your experience and investigative attitude allow you to work independently, to design, perform, and interpret experiments, and to embark on new scientific methodologies.

  • You have been actively engaged in scientific research continuously since your PhD and are ready to start an RPF postdoctoral activity no later than 4 years after PhD.

The start date of this fellowship is April 2024, or on availability. Please clearly indicate your preferred starting date on your motivation letter.
