Job description

The Position

As a Mechanical Design Engineer II at Roche Sequencing Solutions, you will be instrumental in the design, development, characterization, and integration of advanced automation and processing equipment. These systems encompass various subsystems such as fluidic, mechatronic, pneumatic, thermal, optical, and electrical components. You will play a vital role in driving innovation for a highly automated DNA sequencing pipeline and other diagnostic applications.

Some key responsibilities for this role include:

  • Defining and refining requirements and specifications

  • Creating system and subsystem architecture

  • Designing custom components, mechanisms, modules and subassemblies

  • Selecting and evaluating components

  • Subsystem and system level assembly, testing and troubleshooting, as well as analyzing data, writing reports and presenting results.

  • Work closely with other engineers and scientists on integration efforts and provide guidance/oversight to other team members, consultants, contractors, and vendors.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate shall exhibit a high degree of motivation, independence, and resourcefulness to help us develop solutions to processing, manufacturing, and testing needs in a fast-paced environment.

The candidate must also have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree, or higher, in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience

  • A minimum of two years of relevant industry experience designing, building, and/or supporting life science equipment and/or fluidic automation systems. Candidates with exceptional aptitude and experience from other fields or disciplines will also be considered

  • Experience designing automation systems and related mechanisms using both electric and pneumatic actuators

  • A solid understanding of physics and engineering fundamentals

  • A positive, proactive attitude, and a strong passion for science and engineering

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Proficiency in CAD for mechanical design and FEA simulations (SolidWorks experience required)

  • Proficiency with common machine shop tools, as well as test and measurement equipment

  • Proficiency with rapid prototyping technology such as 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC mills/lathes, etc.

  • Proficiency with Python, LabVIEW, or similar tools for device control and data acquisition

Preferred

  • Contributed significantly to the design and development of at least one automated milli- and/or micro-fluidic system, or similar, from feasibility through manufacturing

  • Experience designing systems for handling reagents used in life sciences and diagnostics

  • Experience designing and implementing complex, high performance, milli- and/or micro-fluidic systems utilizing custom manifolds with pumps, valves, sensors, temperature control elements, and other components

  • Demonstrated success working in multidisciplinary team environments

  • Proficiency with Solidworks PDM or similar document management tools

  • Experience with design control under ISO standards

  • Proficiency in GD&T

  • Understanding of chemistry, biological assays, and sequencing technology

Relocation benefits are not offered for this role. The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Santa Clara, CA is $86,275 and $111,650.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law.  A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.  This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed here: Benefits
