The Position:
Genentech's Transgenic Technology department is looking for a highly engaged, motivated, and responsible individual to support our research mission of the discovery of new therapeutics. This position is primarily responsible to provide for the skilled husbandry care of genetically engineered laboratory animals using appropriate equipment and established procedures. Under immediate supervision, the incumbent shall provide primary care of routine husbandry and sanitation for genetically modified rodent models; assists with and perform technical procedures to maintain lab animal health, research integrity and compliance with regulatory and accrediting agency standards and Conduct all aspects of laboratory animal care and husbandry and other tasks as assigned.
· The selected individual will work as part of an integrated team in a dynamic and innovativesite near Davis, CA.
· Responsibilities include performing routine husbandry duties including health observations and monitoring, cage changes, performing basic laboratory techniques, assisting and supporting the veterinary staff, entering data and utilizing various database systems, and other duties as assigned.
· This is a full-time position working 40 hours/week, holidays and rotating weekend work.
Job Responsibilities:
· Performs daily work involving the handling of genetically engineered rodent animal models, animals with immuno-compromised health status, pregnant or nursing dams, neonates, etc.
· Provide feed and water to animals daily or according to established schedules, including verification of (automated) water supply to the cage level.
· Perform cage change (primary enclosures) when soiled or according to established schedules, following proper technique and ensures that animals are not contaminated when outside of their primary enclosure.
· Maintain animal rooms (secondary enclosures) in a neat, clean and orderly state daily so that secondary infections or other contaminations do not occur.
· Perform routine maintenance, sanitation, environmental monitoring, inspect equipment for damage and other routine tasks (clean or change rack air filters, replace room exhaust filters, flush racks, etc.) as required.
· Maintain support rooms, hallways, cage wash areas, feed and bedding rooms in a neat, clean and orderly state daily so that secondary infections or other contaminations do not occur.
· Perform routine quality control checks of room environmental conditions (lighting, temperature, relative humidity, air pressurization, etc.) as required.
· Report animal room or facility maintenance and environmental issues that fall outside animal welfare regulatory or facility requirements to supervisor.
· Evaluate animal health daily including detecting and reporting abnormal clinical signs via electronic data capture system; perform treatments as prescribed by the veterinary staff and report progress of therapies.
· May assist in the operation of and the record keeping for breeding colonies as required and is able to use the electronic data capture system for these tasks.
· May receive and process incoming animals and supplies using the data management system and may transport animals within the facility.
· Maintain the proper operation of and ensure sanitization of animal facility equipment including the use of automated wash systems and automated food and bedding delivery and removal systems, rack washers, automated watering systems and autoclaves for sterilization. Ensure equipment is working properly using biological monitoring devices and techniques.
· May assemble caging supplies with properly sterilized feed, bedding and water in a manner that assures that they remain sterile throughout the handling process.
· Transport necessary cages, racks, bottles and supplies (feed, bedding) between Cage wash and holding rooms.
· May conduct general cleaning and housekeeping of cage wash and service areas, including washing walls, air vents, sinks, doors and doorframes, windows and feed containers.
· Sanitize holding rooms, cage wash and service areas according to established schedules, including the use of sanitation equipment following proper technique in order to ensure that animals are not contaminated when outside of their secondary enclosures.
· May provide specialized technical assistance (e.g., restraint, dosing, sample collection) and other duties required by supervisor or veterinary staff.
· Participate in animal quarantine and health surveillance programs for the facility.
· Performs routine euthanasia on laboratory animals according to the American Veterinary Medical Association's (AVMA) Panel on Euthanasia.
· Attend technician meetings and training sessions on all aspects of laboratory animal care and use of animals in biomedical research as scheduled by the supervisory staff.
· May provide guidance and training to new animal technicians/intern staff.
· Complies with facility and regulatory policies and standard operating procedures.
· Follow all safety requirements and guidelines when working with blood borne pathogens, radiation, biohazards, chemical hazards and medical waste.

Qualifications:
· Level commensurate with certifications, experience, and education (N3-N5)
· Background in Biological or Animal Sciences preferred
· Experience within a facility housing high health status rodent colonies preferred
· Experience working in a facility and with colonies of genetically engineered rodents preferred
· Must have a humane and caring attitude toward all animal species.
· AALAS (American Association for Laboratory Animal Science) certification at the Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) level required.
· One of the following is required:
· High school diploma or equivalency degree and a minimum of 1-2 years of laboratory animal care experience or
· Associates Degree or higher in veterinary or related science from an accredited institution and 6-12 months of laboratory animal care experience.
· Knowledge of common murine species including care, handling, genetics and performing technical procedures.
· Experience working with and caring for domestic, farm or lab animals is desirable.
· Candidates must be detail-oriented, have excellent time management, organizational, communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
· Ability to learn bar code scanner and iPad technology and be able to use a computer for communication, training and documentation.
· Customer-focused attitude and enjoys working with similarly dedicated individuals in a team fashion within a high-energy research environmentand a proven ability to successfully work independently.
· Understanding of federal regulations, veterinary medicine and standards related to animal use and be sensitive to the needs of the animals in their care.
· This position involves daily exposure to laboratory animals and their waste products.
· With proper training, must be willing to work with and around chemical carcinogens and other potentially hazardous materials.
· Must becapable of standing, lifting and movement up to 50 lbs., kneeling, and bending for extended period of time.
