Job description

·  Job facts

We are offering a unique opportunity to join our DNA-encoded library technology (DELT) team at the Roche Innovation Center in Basel, Switzerland.

Who we are

The Lead Discovery department in Roche Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED) initiates and supports small molecule research (SMR) projects by identifying chemical starting points and by providing key data and insights for their successful optimization in the department of Medicinal Chemistry. We are a tightly-knit community of many and diverse talents covering a broad range of expertises ranging from assay development to biochemistry and biophysics. State-of-the-art screening technologies and cellular engineering methods are utilized with the aim to convert biomedical hypotheses into innovative small molecules for treating diseases of high unmet medical need, closely collaborating with our broader therapeutic areas and other functions

The DELT screening team plays an integral role in druggability assessments of novel therapeutic targets and in delivering attractive chemical starting points for the SMR portfolio of pRED.

The position

As aRoche Temporary Scientist (DELT Chemistry) , you are collaboratively contributing to the expansion of the accessible chemical space for DELT screening. You are accountable for delivering multiple attractive chemical starting points for our small-molecule drug discovery projects, embedded in an environment of creative chemists and biochemists.

Your responsibilities include (but are not limited to) the design, synthesis and purification of novel DNA-encoded libraries (DELs) built from diverse and drug-like building blocks. You devise and implement cutting-edge scientific research with a significant portion of your time dedicated to synthetic work in the lab. By designing, planning and executing multi-step DNA-compatible organic syntheses and purification of high-quality DELs and target molecules for biological screening, you maintain a high level of productivity in the laboratory setting. You follow the latest developments in synthetic chemistry and methodology and apply them in your research:

·
Development and optimization of novel on- and off-DNA reactions in homogenous and heterogenous phase and automated library synthesis.

·
Close collaboration with colleagues from the compound logistics team, medicinal chemistry and computer-aided drug design teams to plan and implement library design strategies.

·
Validation and quality control of on-DNA reactions of multiple sets of building blocks and DELs.

·
Sourcing of building blocks and scaffolds including integration with new reaction schemes for library augmentation.

·
Support of DELT screening activities with data processing/analysis and chemical series identification (SAR patterns detection and aggregation).

·
Identification and evaluation of new technologies for improving the DELT platform.

What else are we offering?

We are dedicated to supporting our staff in the development of their knowledge and skills and offer further career opportunities where people demonstrate talent and aptitude.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for a (DEL) chemist / scientist with a PhD in organic chemistry, biological chemistry, chemical biology or a related field and a solid track record of scientific accomplishments demonstrated by publications, patents, or presentations in the relevant field (DELT domain knowledge preferred). 1-3 years of experience in the pharmaceutical or biotech industry and/or postdoctoral studies is highly desirable.

Specifically you are/bring:

·
An expert in synthetic organic chemistry methods and analytical tools (LC-MS). Preferred are candidates with hands-on experience in DNA-compatible and water-based combinatorial chemistry and the knowledge of manipulating small, large and conjugated molecules ( e.g. , synthetic compounds, linkers, chemical probes, nucleic acids, peptides, proteins and their conjugates).

·
In addition to having strong analytical and problem solving skills, the ability to work successfully in both a team and a matrix environment as well as completely independently is advantegous.

·
Flexibility to support and to work on multiple projects in a dynamic and efficient manner.

·
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the aim to present the rationale, key data, issues and accomplishments of your research efforts to other members of the team and the department

·
Comfortable working with large data sets and complex, multi-layered informatics tools necessary to effectively organize, visualize and distill data to facilitate rapid decision making.

·
High level of creativity, productivity and a passion for drug discovery.

Roche embraces diversity and equal opportunity in a serious way. We are committed to building a team that represents a range of backgrounds, perspectives, and skills. The more inclusive we are, the better our work will be.
