Within Roche's Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED), Neuroscience & Rare Diseases represents a major focus area where we are committed to realizing our long-term vision of changing lives of patients with severe brain disorders. Our research and early development activities center around large and rare indications within the four major pillars of neurodevelopmental disorders, movement disorders, dementias, and multiple sclerosis. To achieve our goals, Roche pRED Neuroscience & Rare Diseases is currently undergoing a major recruitment effort for a large number of new positions to develop an effective discovery engine to develop the next generation of transformative therapies. Among these we are seeking a Discovery Scientist in Neurotransmitter Systems in Systems Neuroscience Section within the Department of Research. All positions are based in Basel, Switzerland.

The position

We are seeking an independent and creative scientist interested in using their unique experience to drive exploratory research and drug discovery efforts for neurological and rare disease projects, with a focus on electrophysiology and systems neuroscience. In a highly cross-functional and collaborative environment, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the expansion of our drug discovery efforts in the area of neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental diseases, sleep physiology, cellular and network communication, translational circuit readouts, and neuropharmacology.

As a Discovery Scientist in Neurotransmitter Systems, your main responsibilities are:

· 
Provide electrophysiology and pharmacology support to drug discovery projects

· 
Develop assays for drug screening based on recombinant receptors expressed in eukaryotic cells and Xenopus oocytes using manual patch clamp and two electrodes voltage-clamp

· 
Analyze and interpret experimental data

· 
Study brain circuits involved in Neurodevelopment Diseases using ex-vivo electrophysiological models

· 
Take on the role of drug discovery project leader

· 
Supervision of interns, associates and postdocs

In addition, you will:

· 
Demonstrate scientific excellence by publishing original research and presenting at scientific meetings.

· 
Maintain laboratory records and ensure a safe laboratory environment and work practices.

Essential:

Ph.D. with significant postdoctoral experience and a strong publication record in the neuroscience space

· 
A deep knowledge in electrophysiology, ion channel biophysics, and pharmacology with hands-on experience including patch-clamp electrophysiology is required

· 
Experience in scientific research of ex-vivo rodent animal models

· 
You are a strong team player, and you foster a collaborative spirit with scientists and colleagues. You can adapt to a fast-paced, changing environment, are fluent in English, and have good presentation and communication skills

· 
You're someone who wants to influence your own development. You're looking for a company where you have the opportunity to pursue your interests across functions and geographies

Desirable:

· 
Cell culture and molecular biology knowledge

· 
Experience in calcium imaging and/or optogenetics

· 
Knowledge of programming languages (MATLAB, Python, C/C++)
