We are seeking a highly motivated Animal Welfare Officer .

Acts as expert and advisor on all Animal Welfare related matters and on the 3Rs across the organization; provides expert advice to all employees involved in the legal approval process of animal research permits; advices and supports staff carrying out in-vivo research with expertise in Animal Welfare; is managing efficiently interactions with internal and external business partners (e.g. Head of Animal Facility, resource managers, principal investigators, animal caretakers, competent state veterinarian authorities).

The role's primary goal is to enable in vivo research on site, to safeguard full compliance with all applicable Animal Welfare laws and regulations and to promote Animal Welfare and excellence in in vivo research and the 3Rs in RICB and RICM.

Responsibilities:

·  Support of principal investigators and in vivo staff: The AWO supports and advises principal investigators and in vivo staff in planning and execution of in house in vivo research incl. preparation, timely submission and successful approval of all legally required documents and licenses including animal number reporting. This includes Post Approval Monitoring at regular intervals in the procedure rooms to ensure compliance with regulations and to the conditions of the approved animal permits.
·  Support of the Head of the Animal Facility: The AWO advises the Head of the Facility as needed and monitors at regular intervals the laboratory animal facilities in Switzerland and Germany and thus safeguards compliance with all relevant laws and regulations. He reports the number of animals via Form CH at the end of the calendar year.
·  Interaction with approval- and oversight bodies and authorities: The AWO acts as point person to the competent State Veterinarian Authorities. This includes the cantonal registration of the people performing in-vivo studies and planning, execution and follow-up of onsite inspections by the state veterinarians and/ or the ethics commission.
·  Promotion of Animal Welfare and the 3Rs: The Animal Welfare Officer plays an active role in developing and promoting of Roche`s Animal Welfare standards and of the 3Rs across the Roche organization. This role contains organization and active participation in the development and organization of 3R related trainings and events.

Qualification (Training/ expertise):

·  University Degree in Natural Sciences or Veterinary Medicine
·  PhD and/ or Doctor in Veterinary Medicine
·  Specialization in Laboratory Animal Medicine and/ or Animal Welfare (e.g., FTA für Versuchstierkunde, Tierschutz etc.)
·  Profound knowledge of the Swiss and/or German Animal Welfare Legislation and in the relevant international regulations
·  At least five years of professional experience in the role as Animal Welfare Officer in Switzerland or Germany
·  Own hands on expertise and interest in in vivo research to promote Animal Welfare/ the 3Rs is a plus
·  Continuous education and professional training in Animal Welfare and the 3Rs
·  Strong organizational skills and good team player with dedication
·  Demonstrated skills in relationship building, communication and partnering at all levels and across complex organizations
·  An excellent command of German and English both written and verbal
