2024 Summer Intern - Systems Development

Department Summary

GenMark’s Systems Development team focuses on hardware and consumable development for state of the art multiplex molecular diagnostic solutions. The primary responsibilities of this role will include conducting and monitoring laboratory experiments to develop technical and theoretical understandings important for new product development. With guidance, you will analyze and brainstorm alternative approaches to solve problems and find solutions. You will help develop highly complex electro-mechanical devices as well as injection molded consumables with complex micro fluidics.

This internship position is located in Carlsbad CA, on site.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the development of medical devices and systems.

  • Work closely with the Systems Development team to ensure that all products meet the highest standards of quality and safety.

  • Participate in design reviews and provide feedback on design concepts.

  • Develop and execute test protocols to verify system performance.

  • Assist in the development of system requirements and specifications.

  • Participate in risk management activities.

  • Assist in the development of system architecture and design.

Program Highlights

  • Intensive 12-weeks , full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

  • Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)

  • A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship. 

  • Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

  • Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are (Required) 

Required Education:

You meet one of the following criteria:

- Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student)

- Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student)

- Must be pursuing a PhD degree (enrolled student)

Preferred majors: 

  • Mechanical Engineering

  • Systems Engineering

  • Biomedical Engineering

  • Biotechnology

  • Physics

Preferred skills: 

  • Engineering background

  • Experience working in a laboratory environment

  • Equipment troubleshooting

  • Engineering problem solving

  • Data analysis

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

  • Complements our culture and the standards that guide our daily behavior & decisions: Integrity, Courage, and Passion.

  • Desire GPA 3.0 or higher.

  • Previous work experience

  • Student organization and/or study abroad experiences are a plus.

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. 

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Carlsbad, CA is $22 - $42/hr.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
