2024 Summer Intern - Instrument Development Mechanical Engineer
Department Summary
Instrument Development focuses on all instrument hardware design with a focus on meeting specified requirements to satisfy our customer needs. New and existing products are constantly being created/updated to improve function and/or aid in manufacturability. The instrument designs are considered to be highly complex electro-mechanical devices that require diverse skill sets and team collaboration to ensure the best quality. The Instrument Development department routinely works with many other departments throughout the company to ensure design outputs also satisfy internal stakeholder expectations.
This internship position is located in Tucson, AZ on-site.
Key Responsibilities
Create a 1d system simulation model using tools such as Matlab or Amesim for a given use case related to subassembly used in one of the Roche Tissue Diagnostics instruments.
Calibrate the model with actual data and demonstrate the functionality of this model.
Use CFD package such as Ansys or Solidworks simulation to analyze the fluid flow or thermal distribution on a sub-assembly or unit of interest as applicable for playing "What if" scenarios on the project.
Use CAD package such as SolidWorks to create a model for prototype parts
Program Highlights
Intensive 12-week, full-time (40 hours per week) paid internship
Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)
A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship
Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects

Who You Are (Required)
Required education:
You meet one of the following criteria:
Must be pursuing a Bachelor's Degree (enrolled student)
Must be pursuing a Master's Degree (enrolled student)
Must be pursuing a PhD (enrolled student)
Required majors:
Mechanical Engineering or related fields
Required skills:
Skilled with use of word processing, spreadsheets, graphical and presentation software applications
Solidworks or CAD modeling knowledge
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) knowledge and/or experience with Solidworks simulation or Ansys
Hands-on ability/experience with electro-mechanical and small-scale fluidic/pneumatic systems
Preferred Qualifications
Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles and concepts
Desire GPA 3.0 or higher
Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
